Recycling of styrofoam waste: synthesis, characterization and application of novel phenyl thiosemicarbazone surface

Abstract: An attempt has been made to recycle Styrofoam waste to a novel functional polymer, Phenyl thiosemicarbazone surface (PTS). Polystyrene (PS) obtained from Styrofoam waste was acetylated and then condensed to PTS by reacting it with 4-Phenyl-3-thiosemicarbazide ligand and characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Synthesized PTS was applied successfully for the treatment of lead contaminated water by batch extraction method. Sorption variables were optimized (pH 8, adsorbent dose 53mg, initial … Show more

“…EPS has an air content of about 90–95 vol% and a range of densities between 16 and 640 kg m −3 . 79 EPS foam is widely used as an insulator, protective material for products during transportation, disposable food containers, and many other applications. 80 However, the non-degradable nature and stable chemical properties of EPS, associated with its large volume, have created environmental issues.…”

“…One of the methods for chemical recycling is dissolution. Figure 4 illustrates PS degradation by dissolution and a scheme of liquid products valuable in PS depolymerization, such as catalytic pyrolysis, dilute acid, and pyrolysis [ 105 , 106 ]. The polymeric components are first dissolved, then various processes are used to recover the solvent and polymer [ 107 ].…”
