“…In addition D-penicillamine has been shown to inhibit mitogen-induced lymphocyte transformation. 16 17 All these authors found a concentration-dependent effect with doses similar to ours. This work indicates that another type of cell originating from the mesoderm is also sensitive to the action of D-penicillamine and confirms that the chondrocyte is a target cell for this drug.…”

“…D-PA forms stable mixed disulphides with many sulphydryl compounds, including cysteine, which may cause cysteine deficiency effects on in vitro systems. This caused some confusing results at first, but it is now established that D-PA in fact has a dose-dependent inhibitory effect on lymphocyte activation by phytohemagglutinin (19). Addition of cysteine diminishes this effect whereas CuS04 enhances inhibition.…”

“…In vitro studies of the action of D-pen demonstrated that in lymphocyte cultures from normal individuals the mitogenic effects of phytohemagglutinin and concanavalin A were inhibited at D-pen doses of b 100 pg/ml.14322, 24 Investigations of immunoglobulin synthesis by human peripheral blood lymphocytes stimulated with pokeweed mitogen in short-term culture showed that preincubation with D-pen (100 pg/ml) alone had little effect and that significant inhibition of immunoglobulin synthesis occurred only when copper sulfate (3 pg/ml) was also p r e~e n t . '~ Although this inhibition of nonspecific immunoglobulin synthesis may be the basis for some of the observed changes in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, it offers no explanation for the appearance (or enhancement) of AChR antibody in patients who develop myasthenia while being treated with D-pen.…”
