The instability of globalization: applying evolutionary game theory to global trade cooperation

Abstract: A new wave of protectionism is threatening the open and cooperative international order. This paper applies evolutionary game theory to analyze the stability of international trade cooperation. Global trade liberalization is modeled as an iterated prisoner’s dilemma between all possible pairs of WTO member states. Empirical data are used to model the sizes and competitiveness of the respective markets, which then determine the resulting gains and costs of trade cooperation. Because of the large number of WTO m… Show more

“…Evolutionary games can be understood as repeated games through random pairings between groups by employing the dynamic mechanism of replication to continuously optimize strategies and finally reach the evolutionary stable state of the system [17], [18]. In recent years, applied research on evolutionary game theory has developed, involving environmental resource protection [19], [20], financial and trade development [21], [22], transportation management [23], [24], and public administrative supervision [25], [26]. Because the research of this paper is about the logistics industry and regulatory measures, the analysis of evolutionary game research in these two aspects is the focus.…”

“…One of the fundamental tenets of game theory is that all participants act rationally and want to maximize their rewards. A fundamental idea in traditional economics is the presumption of rationality, which standardizes and simplifies decision-making (Krapohl et al, 2021). The assumption of rational behavior is not always warranted as it emphasizes that individuals solely focus on their own interests in making decisions without taking into account the interests of society and their benevolence.…”

“…Pan et al [52] innovatively expounded the process of cultural transmission, adaptation, maintenance, and change based on evolutionary game theory. Krapohl et al [53] analyzed the stability of international trade cooperation by using evolutionary game theory. Dong and Yan [54] constructed an evolutionary game matrix about working overtime from the perspective of information asymmetry.…”
