EFL Sundanese learners encounter the difficulties in English pronunciation. The learners are often unable to differ between English vowel sounds long [i:] with short [I] like the word cheese they pronounce it as /ʧIz/ instead of /ʧiːz/, despite they have learned English since elementary school, officially they have learned English for around 5 years. The purpose of this study is to explore the interference of mother tongue in pronunciation field that was made by Sundanese learners dealing with English vowels and diphthongs. The participants were 30 EFL learners with Sundanese background as their mother tongue. The data were collected by recording the students’ pronunciation and analysed using contrastive analysis. The results demonstrate that the learners met obstacles in uttering English vowels [i:],[u:],[ɔ], and diphthongs[eɪ],[əʊ],[æ]. The dominant mispronunciation of the English sounds occurs because of the absence of those English sounds in the learners’ mother tongue. This paper offers some recommendations to the teachers to overcome the phenomenon mother tongue interference.

A Program Based on the Inquiry Approach to Develop the EFL Majors' Language Performance at Al-Azhar University in Palestine

The current research aims at developing EFL Majors' language performance in general, and writing in particular at Al-Azhar University in Palestine in the light of the inquiry approach. To achieve this, a group of 3 rd year, English department students (n=115) participated in the study. The researcher designed a writing performance test of 6 components; identifying main ideas, posing questions, paraphrasing, narrating, problemsolving and argumentation. The pretest revealed that most of the participants' writing performance was not up to the required level. Therefore, the researcher engaged them in a program based on the inquiry approach which took place in the academic year 2017-2018. This study employed the one group experimental design along with mixed research approach incorporating quantitative and qualitative analyses. After treatment, the post-test showed that there was a significant development in students' writing performance. Furthermore, the participants showed positive reflections towards the program. The study findings indicated the effect of the program in developing the participant's writing performance. In light of these findings, the researcher stated some pedagogical implications, limitations and recommendations.

Using Brain Imaging to Gauge Difficulties in Processing Ambiguous Text by Non-native Speakers

Processing ambiguous text is an ever challenging problem for humans. In this study, we investigate how native-Arabic speakers face problems in processing their non-native English language text which involves ambiguity. As a case study, we focus on prepositional-phrase (PP) attachment ambiguity whereby a PP can be attached to the preceding noun (aka low attachment) or the preceding verb (aka high attachment). We setup an experiment in which human participants read text on a computer screen and their brain activity is monitored using near infrared spectroscopy. Participants read two types of text: one involving PP-attachment ambiguity and the other unambiguous text which is used as a control for comparison purposes. The brain activity data for ambiguous and control text are clustered using hierarchical-clustering technique available in Weka. The data reveal that Arabic speakers face more difficulty in processing ambiguous text as compared to unambiguous text.
