Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis kemampuan komunikasi matematis siswa SMP pada materi segitiga dan segiempat. Dengan sampel penelitian adalah 5 orang siswa kelas VII yang diambil secara acak di salah satu SMP di kota Cimahi. Jenis penelitian yang digunakan adalah penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Adapun instrumen yang digunakan adalah soal tes kemampuan komunikasi matematis berupa 5 butir soal berbentuk essay. Adapun hasil tes yang telah dilakukan pada beberapa soal kemampuan komunikasi matematis masih menunjukkan hasil dibawah rata-rata. Maka dapat disimpulkan bahwa tingkat kemampuan komunikasi matematis siswa masih tergolong rendah
Complaint is intrinsically an abusive act which tends to offend the complainees. In spite of this complainers could consider politeness when they still intend to maintain a good relationship with the complainees. This paper investigated politeness strategies involved in complaints relating to different social status levels and social distances. The data of the complaints were elicited through oral discourse completion tasks from 50 Indonesian learners of English consisting of 25 males and 25 females. The findings indicated that most complaints sounded very direct, particularly those addressed to lower-unfamiliar interlocutors. Four politeness strategies of Brown and Levinson (1987) were employed by the learners. Bald on record and Positive politeness were the most pervasive strategies used across status levels and social distances. Negative politeness was comparatively high, but it was not as high as Bald on record and Positive politeness. Off-record was rarely phrased across status levels and social distances.
The present study investigated intentions and motivating factors of using impoliteness in interlanguage complaints by EFL learners. Empirical data were elicited by means of oral discourse completion tasks and questionnaires from 42 Indonesian learners of English. Post-structured interviews were conducted to obtain the intentions and reasons of deploying impoliteness in the complaints. The results reveal that impoliteness is triggered by three general motivating factors; speaker-related factors, target person-related factors, and contextual factors. A number of intentions of deploying impoliteness are found, and they suggest that impoliteness is a means to an end rather than an end itself.
A growing body of literature has investigated impoliteness in many domains. Nevertheless, little research has examined impoliteness done by foreign language learners. Impoliteness used in interlanguage complaints by English as a foreign language learners was observed. The effects of interlocutors' different status levels and social distance on the use of impoliteness were analyzed. Empirical data were elicited by means of oral discourse completion tasks from 50 Indonesian English as a foreign language learners in Central Java, Indonesia. The overall direction of the findings showed trends that status levels and social distance between interlocutors prompted different frequencies and strategies of impoliteness. The frequent use of impolite complaints was instigated by a number of factors such as the learners' understanding about the speech act in question, their perceptions on the social distance and status levels of interlocutors, and the nature of the research instrument.
This study aims to explore the strengths and weaknesses of extensive reading using Wattpad platform based on students’ perceptions. Extensive reading allows students to have more variation in their reading materials as they can read authentic texts from various sources that it is actually applied outside the class room for most people consider it as joyful reading. The advancement of technology over the times enables people to do many activities online, including extensive reading activity. Hence, Wattpad is believed to provide enormous free and paid reading materials that can support extensive reading for the students. To achieve the objectives, this study is in the form of case study. The data were collected through in-depth interview with the participants. The participants were two undergraduate students majoring English Education from two different universities in Indonesia. The participants were selected purposively because they were known to have been doing extensive reading activity on Wattpad for a quite long time, specifically for five years. The research findings showed several strengths of using Wattpad for extensive reading such as Wattpad gives students numerous and various sources of reading materials; extensive reading on Wattpad is a fun and enjoyable experience; extensive reading on Wattpad is more practical than using printed-books; extensive reading on Wattpad is money-saving; the reading materials on Wattpad have good quality contents; extensive reading through Wattpad improves students English’s skills unconsciously as well as the reading habit. Meanwhile, there are several weaknesses of extensive reading using Wattpad according to students such as; similarities in the reading materials sometimes make them boring to read; using the platform for a certain long time can potentially cause tired eyes; there are other distractions that can disrupt the extensive reading activity.
