“…Transfusion of blood in trauma patients may increase risk of morbidity and mortality . It may also be associated with adverse events such as transfusion‐related acute lung injury, transfusion‐related circulatory overload, and infections . Prolonged red blood cell storage may potentiate these effects.…”

“…1,2 It may also be associated with adverse events such as transfusion-related acute lung injury, transfusion-related circulatory overload, and infections. 3 Prolonged red blood cell storage may potentiate these effects. Indeed, prolonged storage of blood before transfusion can lead to biochemical and biomechanical changes collectively known as "storage lesion."…”

“…Hence, a rudimentary imputability assessment was taking place since the system was filtering out cases where the imputability was unlikely or excluded. That same practice is suggested for EU reporting and is in place for data sharing in the IHN‐owned and sponsored International Database for Surveillance of Transfusion Adverse Reactions and Events (ISTARE) . Nevertheless, both those systems additionally request a formal imputability assessment, and this makes explicit the fact that adverse reactions and adverse events which have a temporal association with transfusion may not have been caused by the transfusion.…”

“…An ATR is an undesirable response or effect in a patient that is temporally associated with the administration of blood or blood components . There are many aetiologies of ATRs , including haemolytic transfusion reactions and non‐haemolytic transfusion reactions such as febrile non‐haemolytic transfusion reactions (FNHTR), allergic reactions, transfusion‐related acute lung injury (TRALI) and transfusion‐associated circulatory overload (TACO) . The severity of each ATR was graded from 1 to 4, as follows: grade 1 (non‐severe), grade 2 (severe), grade 3 (life‐threatening) and grade 4 (death).…”
