Given the growth in data collection and application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the construction industry, there is a need to study the ethical and social considerations for employees in the industry and for society in general. AI could support more efficient ways of working where technology is better equipped for the tasks compared to humans. With new technologies such as AI, many decisions will be made by algorithms and not by humans. This paper explores the ethical and social dilemmas that are intrinsic in decisionmaking, and how they will also impact the decisions made by AI algorithms. The paper presents definitions of ethical and social dilemmas, a definition of AI, and summarizes current applications of AI in construction. It also discusses several questions associated with the current and future application of AI in the construction industry and the ethical and social dilemmas defined. This is an exploratory paper and the aim of the authors is to spark further research and discussion on the topic within the Lean Construction community, given that lean is based on respect for people and the implications of AI uses to individuals in our industry have not been understood.

As tecnologias digitais têm apresentado resultados que contribuem para a modernização do setor da construção civil. Nos dois últimos anos observa-se uma evolução do interesse sobre o tema e a expansão da utilização de tecnologias digitais em canteiro, a exemplo do crescimento das ações voltadas à adoção do BIM, as iniciativas visando à capacitação profissional para a realização de projetos e obras, e as discussões em torno da utilização integrada das tecnologias digitais. A pandemia acelerou significativamente este processo, a partir da utilização do trabalho remoto. Adotou-se como estratégia da pesquisa exploratória e descritiva que foca na entrevista de profissionais do setor de AECO no ambiente goianiense. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo levantar a aplicação de tecnologias na indústria de construção civil goianiense, as vantagens e as desvantagens na utilização, com a finalidade de levantar e analisar as interações do ambiente em relação à essas no presente momento, às perspectivas de crescimento e à modernização da indústria local. Quanto ao uso das tecnologias no canteiro, 7 das 11 estudadas são usadas em menos de 30% das empresas participantes desta pesquisa.

The uniqueness and inherent complexities of the construction industry require the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve its processes and enhance overall competitiveness and performance. This study examined the awareness level and application of AI to provide useful insights into the state of AI applications in the Nigerian construction industry. A quantitative research design with the use of a questionnaire was used to obtain data from 53 construction professionals in the Lagos Island area of Lagos State, Nigeria. The professionals included Quantity Surveyors, Architects, Civil Engineers, Builders, and Estate Surveyors selected based on a purposive sampling technique. Data from the survey were analyzed with frequencies, mean, and ANOVA. The study found that most of the respondents were aware of the application of AI in construction, and there was no difference in the awareness level of the participants irrespective of their professional affiliations, organizational type, and organizational size. Generally, the most common application of AI among the participants surveyed were generative designs in BIM, measurement and estimating software, and the use of sensors in intelligent buildings. Moreover, design and project planning was found to be the most critical areas of need for AI in the study area. The study underscores the need for investments in other AI applications other than BIM and estimating software to improve productivity, performance, and enhance client satisfaction.
