The K-SF-42

Abstract: The purpose of the present article is to propose an alternative short form for the 199-item Arizona Life History Battery (ALHB), which we are calling the K-SF-42, as it contains 42 items as compared with the 20 items of the Mini-K, the short form that has been in greatest use for the past decade. These 42 items were selected from the ALHB, unlike those of the Mini-K, making direct comparisons of the relative psychometric performance of the two alternative short forms a valid and instructive exercise. A series … Show more

“…The primary variables of interest were LEAS scores (Barchard et al, 2010;Lane et al, 1990) and scores on the K-SF-42, a common measure of LHS (Figueredo et al, 2017;Manson, Chua, & Lukaszewski, 2020). We also collected two measures of early childhood adversity, the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ; Bernstein et al, 2003) and the Childhood Experiences of Care and Abuse questionnaire (CECA; Bifulco, Bernazzani, Moran, & Jacobs, 2005).…”

“…The K-SF-42 is a shortened version of the Arizona Life History Battery (Figueredo et al, 2017). It contains 42 statements, assessing seven LHS sub-domains (6 items each), where participants select responses either from "strongly disagree" (-3) to "strongly agree" (+3) or from "not at all (0) to "a lot" (4), depending on the statement.…”

“…In his extended model of LH-related traits, Del Giudice (2018) introduced some additional profiles to the traditional clusters of LH indicators, pointing out the possibility of multiple fast and slow LH strategies that would comprise different conformations of psychological traits. Such reasoning challenges the currently popular "lumping" approach that posits the existence of fixed sets of LH traits (e.g., Figueredo et al 2007Figueredo et al , 2017bGiosan 2006).…”

“…In the field of psychology, several psychometric tools are designed to assess LH strategy pace. These measures include the High-K strategy scale (HKSS, Giosan 2006), the Arizona Life History Battery (ALHB; Figueredo et al 2007), the Mini-K (Figueredo et al 2006), and K-SF-42 (Figueredo et al 2017b). The two latter instruments constitute alternative short versions of the ALHB.…”

“…Participants were then asked to complete (in randomized order) the following instruments: K-SF-42. This 42-item version of the ALHB includes six items from each of the seven ALHB scales (Figueredo et al, 2017). These scales (with exemplary items) are (1) Insight, Planning, and Control ("when I encounter problems, I don't give up until I solve them"), (2) General Altruism ("I contribute a great deal to the welfare and well-being of my friends these days"), (3) Religiosity ("religion is important in my life"), (4) Experiences in Close Relationships (i.e., attachment style; "I don't feel comfortable opening up to romantic partners"), (5) Relationships with Biological Parents ("while you were growing up, how much did your biological mother teach you about life?…”
