The kinetics of adsorption of tetracycline on chitosan particles

Abstract: Experiments to monitor and characterize the kinetics of adsorption of tetracycline on chitosan particles are reported in this work. The same pseudo-order kinetics that has been widely used for describing the adsorption in systems related to wastewater purification and drug loading was used to treat the present data. As some unexpected results came out from the experiments, it was necessary a detailed deduction for this sort of kinetics to be carried out, so that approximations related to short and long times w… Show more

“…Controlled drug release polymeric devices have been a unique interest in the drug development zone as they hit the specific target with the active compound and also provide a good control on the rate of dosage release. Several different types of polymer have been used among which chitosan (Caroni et al, 2009) (Caroni et al, 2012) takes a special note from environmental, safety and cost point of view. In this study, chitosan was first purified by dissolving the crude chitosan in 2% acetic acid solution, and the resultant solution was filtered in two stages using a nylon screen filter, precipitated using 5% NAOH solution, finally the powder was separated by filtration and washed with distilled water and purified.…”

“…The supernatant was centrifuged at 14,000 rpm for 30 min and then filtered through a 0.22 µm membrane filter. Free tetracycline in the supernatant suspension was the amount of drug not encapsulated into LMWA nanoparticles; its concentration was assayed by spectrophotometry at 423 nm [25]. The PLE % was calculated from equation (2):…”

“…An important aspect in the study of absorption is the kinetics that describes the effect of time on the interactions between absorbate and absorbent [28] . It is well known that first-order and second-order kinetic expressions are the most commonly used kinetics models in the literature [29][30][31][32][33][34][35] , so the first-order and second-order kinetic expressions were selected to correlate experimental data with theoretical data for organic matter absorption at the solid=liquid interfaces in this work.…”
