The Latent Factors Behind the Urban Travel Behaviour

Abstract: This research aims to explore the impact of latent variables, mirroring the users' preferences, on the individual decision making process regarding the mode of transport. The paper describes the first results of an ongoing research activity, which derives from a pilot study carried out in Palermo. The authors have administered to a sample of travellers a questionnaire and they simulated the mode choice behaviour referring to the random utility theory. Then the transport demand over the entire area of Palermo h… Show more

“…This result is consistent with Johansson et al, (2006) , who indicated that comfort preferences are correlated with the likelihood of choosing bus use over car use and train use over bus use. In addition, de Oña et al (2015), Hadiuzzaman et al, 2019 , Hadiuzzaman et al, 2019 , and Migliorea et al (2014) examined the influence of the degree of cleanliness or lack thereof perceived by users of a public transportation system. The cost of the trip also plays an important role in the choice of a mode of travel ( Cats et al, 2017 ; Hess, 2017).…”

“…The traffic of this arc is then redistributed in the road network causing an increase of vehicles·km and vehicles·hour. Traffic disruption costs have been evaluated adopting an occupancy rate of vehicles equal to 1.30 and considering that the average VOT in the urban area of Palermo is about 5.40 €/passenger•hour [12]. The present value of construction, maintenance and operation costs of the drainage network dimensioned for each design return period and the corresponding present values of the expected annual damages and the present total costs are reported in Table 2 and Fig.…”

“…Findings of this research show an overview of the community in Indonesia and, in particular, the study area of Bakauheni -Bandar Lampung, which expresses attitudes and perceptions relatively differ compared to the habits in developed countries such as Romania, the UK, and Italy [12,13,14] which more consider service quality such as travel time while choosing transport mode even though the purpose of a trip sometimes also influences the choice.…”

“…It is important to note that both Lampung and south Sumatera provinces are the two most dynamic growth provinces in the southern part of Sumatera because of the support of their natural resources and benefited from the additional capacity of the trans-Sumatera toll road where the travel time from and to capital Jakarta has decreased significantly. The findings of the research will be attractive compared to the phenomenon of commuting behavior in emerging urban areas in developed countries, such as Napoca, Romania [12], and case study cities in London [13] and Palermo [14].…”
