The life cycle of Stemphylium vesicarium, the causal agent of Welsh onion leaf blight

Abstract: Symptoms of Welsh onion leaf blight, caused by Stemphylium vesicarium, are divided into two types, i.e., brown oval lesions and yellow mottle lesions. Yellow mottle lesions exert considerable economic damage on Welsh onion in northern Japan. In this study, we investigated the life cycle of the pathogen in terms of seasonal fluctuation of spore dispersal and its relationship with development of disease, formation period of pseudothecia and overwintering of the pathogen based on field surveys, spore trapping and… Show more

“…In addition to onion, S. vesicarium been found to be pathogenic on garlic (Basallote, 1993), leek (Suheri and Price, 2001), Welsh onion (Misawa and Yasuoka, 2012), asparagus (Falloon, 1987) andEuropean pear (Pyrus communis L.) (Llorente and Montesinos, 2006). Also, in addition to known hosts, the pathogen can cause Stemphylium Blight of Onion: A Review asymptomatic infections and develop as endophytes in the living tissues of various plants (Kohl et al, 2009;Misawa and Yasuoka 2012). In order to prove the pathogenic nature of Stemphylium vesicarium, different workers have adopted different methods on different bulbous vegetables.…”

“…The primary infection and propagation of the disease are attributed to conidia and ascospores, which originate from plant debris [ 13 – 15 ]. Furthermore, infected seeds facilitate pathogen’s dissemination across regions and serve as an initial source of inoculum during the season [ 16 ].…”
