The long-term efficacy of a behavioral parent training intervention for families with 2-year-olds

Abstract: The effectiveness of a behavioral parent training (BPT) intervention for improving maternal self-efficacy, maternal stress, and the quality of mother-toddler interactions has been demonstrated (Gross, Fogg, & Tucker, 1995). The 1-year follow-up of the 46 parents of toddlers (assigned to an intervention or comparison group) who participated in that study is reported. It was hypothesized that (a) BPT would lead to enduring positive changes in parenting self-efficacy, parenting stress, and parent-toddler interact… Show more

“…2,22,23 The observed increase in parenting confidence and ability to set boundaries is particularly important given the association between authoritative parenting and the achievement of family change and better parent-child interaction. 24 Moreover, evidence that the relationship between parental efficacy and health is stronger in low-income groups 25,26 has particular relevance given HENRY's delivery in disadvantaged areas. Enhanced emotional wellbeing increased too; this is known to promote self-efficacy, the likelihood of behaviour change 26 and parental modelling of healthy lifestyle, so potentially influencing what children eat 27 and their levels of physical activity.…”

“…Thus, from an applied perspective, mothers who perceive that there is little they can do to change their life chances may need additional support because they may have difficulty recognizing available emotional and instrumental support. In addition, some practitioners have argued that to achieve lasting changes in parenting stress levels, the intervention must create lasting improvements in parents' confidence and sense of being effective in parenting ( Tucker, Gross, Fogg, Delaney, & Lapporte, 1998). Our finding that self-efficacy was related to being in the decreasing parenting stress trajectory adds to the empirical evidence suggesting that self-efficacy is not only a protective factor at one single point in time but is also related to reductions in parenting stress over time.…”
