The Long-Term Trends and Interannual Variability in Surface Ozone Levels in Beijing from 1995 to 2020

Abstract: Tropospheric ozone is an important atmospheric pollutant as well as an efficient greenhouse gas. Beijing is one of the cities with the most serious ozone pollution. However, long-term date of observed ozone in Beijing are limited. In this paper, we combine the measurements of the In-service Aircraft for a Global Observing System (IAGOS), ozonesonde observations as well as the recently available ozone monitoring network observations to produce a unique data record of surface ozone (at 14:00 Beijing time) in Bei… Show more

“…As for O 3 , a slightly increased trend of autumnal O 3 in Beijing (0.57 ppbv year −1 ) has been reported (Hong et al., 2022). However, in typhoon‐induced episodes, we find a relatively large increase in O 3 concentration from the first 4 years (58 ppbv) to the second 4 years (65 ppbv) (Figure S12 in Supporting Information ).…”

“…Since this time, improved observational techniques, especially the launch of satellites, have allowed researchers to more accurately study ozone at all altitudes across the globe [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19]. The researchers found a low ozone value region similar to the Antarctic ozone hole in the upper troposphere-lower troposphere (UTLS) region in the middle and high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, known as the "Ozone Valley".…”

“…In addition, other combined decomposition methods or structures have been proposed in series and time convolution and long-term short-memory bidirectional networks [10]. Other models use a non-parametric Theil-Sen estimator as a robust Kendall [11] line-fit method or locally estimated scatterplot models for smoothing to filter the data obtained and subsequently decompose the time series models into trend, seasonal, and residual components of data and then recombine them appropriately [12]. After the decomposition of the time series into components or subseries, the data can be used in standardized time series modeling as linear, nonlinear autoregressive, or autoregressive moving averages.…”
