The Luminosity and Mass Function of the Trapezium Cluster: From B Stars to the Deuterium‐burning Limit

Abstract: We use the results of a new, multi-epoch, multi-wavelength, near-infrared census of the Trapezium Cluster in Orion to construct and to analyze the structure of its infrared (K band) luminosity function. Specifically, we employ an improved set of model luminosity functions to derive this cluster's underlying Initial Mass Function (IMF) across the entire range of mass from OB stars to sub-stellar objects down to near the deuterium burning limit. We derive an IMF for the Trapezium Cluster that rises with decreasi… Show more

“…The core contains the Trapezium system consisting of (at least) 6 stars with a total mass of 88.4 M (Hillenbrand 1997). Brown dwarfs have since been detected in the centre of the cluster (Hillenbrand & Carpenter 2000;Luhman et al 2000;Lucas et al 2001;Muench et al 2002), so that the mean mass may decreases to 0.5 M (Scally et al 2005), in good agreement with the canonical IMF.…”

“…This extensively studied relatively evolved system (see e.g. Hillenbrand 1997;Muench et al 2002) has some obvious similarities to our younger system. Centered on θ 1 C Ori, TC has a diameter of ∼0.3 pc (Hillenbrand 1997) comparable to the separation of the two SDC335 millimetre cores (0.32 pc).…”

“…The mean stellar mass is aboutm ≈ 0.5 M and the half-mass radius R hm ≈ 1 pc (Hillenbrand & Hartmann 1998). Recent studies of the stellar mass distribution (Hillenbrand & Carpenter 2000;Luhman et al 2000;Muench et al 2002;Slesnick et al 2004) reveal no significant deviation from the generalized IMF of Kroupa (2002),…”
