This paper considers the small glass objects often called counters, which are common finds at Pompeii, and normally thought to have been used in playing games. An assemblage of over 500 stratigraphically dated examples from Insula VI.1 are examined, and the colour and size of this group are compared to a dataset of first-century AD glass counters found in graves where they can be shown with certainty to be part of gaming sets. The comparisons show that the bulk of the Pompeii counters are very unlikely to have been used in gaming, a conclusion that is supported by the types of counters that would have been necessary to play games such as ludus latrunculorum and ludus duodecim scriptorum. Other functions are considered and it is suggested that many of the Pompeiian counters might have been used for interior decoration. The rise of a specialist production of counters that could have been used in gaming is demonstrated, and it is suggested this might have implications for the development of craft specialization and demonstrate the rise of leisure time in the first century AD.Questo articolo esamina i piccoli oggetti di vetro spesso chiamati 'pedine', ritrovamenti comuni a Pompei e che generalmente si pensa che fossero usati in relazione all'attività ludica. Viene esaminato un insieme di più di 500 esemplari dalla Insula VI.1, datati su base stratigrafica, e il colore e la dimensione di questo gruppo vengono paragonati a quelli di un insieme di 'pedine' vitree risalenti al I sec. d.C., rinvenuti in tombe e di cui è certo l'utilizzo come parti di set da gioco. Il paragone mostra come la maggior parte delle 'pedine' da Pompei difficilmente sia stata utilizzata in relazione ad attività ludiche. Questa conclusione è supportata da un'analisi che tiene conto dei tipi di pedine che sarebbero stati necessari per giochi come il ludus latrunculorum e il ludus duodecim scriptorum. Si prendono quindi in considerazione altre possibili funzioni e si suggerisce come molte delle 'pedine' da Pompei fossero utilizzate per decorazioni d'interni. Nell'articolo viene inoltre evidenziato lo sviluppo di una produzione specialistica di 'pedine' utilizzabili nelle attività ludiche e si suggerisce come ciò abbia potuto avere implicazioni nello sviluppo della specializzazione delle tecniche artigianali e dimostra l'aumento della disponibilità di 'tempo libero' nel I sec. d.C.

Bio-archaeological studies can contribute significantly to understanding the economic interactions between cities and their hinterland. In Pompeii, where research has often been intramurally focussed, analysis of biological remains is often confined to bones and macro-botanicals consumed as foodstuffs. Charcoal, if collected, often remains unexamined, and yet this material is key to understanding the fuel economy of a city. This study has two goals: first, to describe an efficient method for charcoal sampling and analysis in a dense urban environment using only dry-sieved charcoals above 5 mm; and, second, in doing so, to demonstrate the dependent relationship between Pompeii and its hinterland for the provision of fuel in a case study from the House of the Vestals. A pilot study of 25 contexts from six ‘rooms’ and 750 charcoal fragments was followed by an extended study of 62 contexts over 14 rooms (a total of 1579 charcoal fragments). The extended results identified only two further (minor) taxa (represented by only three fragments). The most important wood identified was beech (Fagus sylvatica), which constituted 50–75 per cent of the fuel supply, depending on the time period. Beech grows preferentially above about 900 m in central and southern Italy. Pompeii lies at 30 m altitude with the nearest mountain areas at least 15 km away. The study suggests that a methodology that relies on collection of charcoal from routine dry sieving (5 mm grid), in soils where this is possible, can provide robust results in a cost effective manner in an urban setting.

The marble-clad surfaces of the numerous bars or shops (so-called thermopolia) of Pompeii and Herculaneum are a vast and hitherto untapped source of information about marble use beyond the confines of public building and élite houses. Four field seasons of survey work have documented 49 bars at Pompeii and eight at Herculaneum with over 8,000 pieces of stone, mainly marble. This paper discusses the results of this project: first, the types of stone used on these bars and how they were displayed; second, what their quantities and distribution, within these cities and on individual bars, reveal about the pervasiveness of the wider pan-Mediterranean marble trade; third, what we can say about where these materials came from and how they were acquired, and what this in turn reveals about the economics of reuse of architectural materials in the Vesuvian cities.I rivestimenti marmorei delle superfici di numerosi bar e negozi (cosiddetti thermopolia) di Pompei e Ercolano sono una vasta e finora inesplorata fonte di informazioni sull'uso dei marmi aldilà dei confini di un edificio pubblico e dalle case elitarie. Quattro stagioni di ricognizioni su queste città hanno permesso di documentare 49 bars a Pompeii e otto a Ercolano con oltre 8.000 pezzi di pietre, principalmente marmi. L'articolo discute i risultati di questo progetto: innanzitutto i tipi di pietra usati nei bars e il modo in cui venivano disposte; in secondo luogo, la quantità e distribuzione, all'interno di queste città e nei singoli bar, che rivelano la pervasività del più ampio panorama mediterraneo del commercio dei marmi; in terzo luogo, cosa si può dire sulla provenienza di questi materiali e come venivano acquistati e quindi cosa questo significhi circa le economie dei riusi dei materiali architettonici nelle città vesuviane.
