The many flavours of photometric redshifts

Abstract: For more that seventy years, the measurements of fluxes of galaxies at different wavelengths and derived colours have been used to estimate their corresponding cosmological distances. From the fields of galaxy and AGN evolution to precision cosmology, the number of scientific projects relying on such distance measurements, called photometric redshifts, have exploded. The benefits of photometric redshifts is that all sources detected in photometric images can have some distance estimates relatively cheaply. The… Show more

“…Including the WISE colours in the algorithm significantly narrows the ∆z distribution (σ∆z = 0.38), which is further improved with the addition of the GALEX colours (σ∆z = 0.31). Without the need for visual inspection nor the filtering out of outliers, the spread is comparable to other studies (using similar and differing methods) which include NIR photometry (Ball et al 2008;Bovy et al 2012;Brescia et al 2013;Yang et al 2017;Duncan et al 2018;Salvato et al 2019).…”

“…The feasible way is to estimate their photo-z by multi-band observations. The accuracy of photo-z depends on observations, such as the overall wavelength coverage, the central position and band-width of filters, photometric accuracy, etc., as well as the methodology for photo-z estimates (Hildebrandt et al 2010;Salvato et al 2019).…”

“…The photo-z errors are often characterized by the bias, the scatter, and the fraction of outliers, estimated using a subsample of galaxies with known spec-z (Salvato et al 2019). It is noted that not only these information, but also their uncertainties, namely, errors on errors, are important in tomographic WL studies.…”

“…Photometric redshifts are a key component for the exploitation of large imaging surveys (see, e.g., Salvato et al 2019, for a review). They are a cheap alternative to spectroscopic surveys for the measurement of distances of millions of galaxies.…”
