Severe hurricane activity of 2004 and 2005 has reminded the industry of the importance of integrity management of floating structures. One of the main methods used in assessing the fitness of a floating system after a hurricane event, is to evaluate the actual behavior of the hull, mooring and riser systems versus design assumptions using high and low frequency motions of the platform. As a result, vessels are typically outfitted with inertial six degree-of-freedom inertial navigation systems (INS) and differential global positioning systems (DGPS). Common practice is to use INS for wave frequency measurements whereas DGPS is used for low frequency drift motions.Combining INS and DGPS signals into a single signal covering the entire frequency range requires the choice of appropriate cut-off frequencies for both instruments and the use of advanced filtering techniques. Both tasks are usually source of much debate.The objective of this study is to demonstrate that modern DGPS have the same ability as INS to measure floating systems wave frequency motions and provide a redundant set of measurements that users can use to verify the accuracy of the INS data.Using marine data collected on BP Holstein truss spar during hurricane Katrina and BP Atlantis semi-submersible during a 2006 winter storm, the wave frequency motions extracted from the DGPS signals after correcting for pitch and roll motions show very good agreement with the INS signals in the time domain.Since both vessels are outfitted with DGPS of varying accuracy, the accuracy of these different systems is discussed. The results are also presented as a function of the sea states to demonstrate the ability of DGPS in the smaller sea states. The results of the study show that the DGPS can be used in the wave frequency motion ranges, which is typically been measured with INS. The results presented in this paper help in better understanding and interpretation of the field data and lead to better practices in the integrity management of offshore platforms.

Installed 160 miles South of New Orleans in 1300 m of water, the Marco Polo Tension Leg Platform is subjected to an extensive monitoring campaign to benchmark design data and methods. The purpose of the full scale monitoring campaign is to evaluate the design in operation exposed to hurricane and loop-current conditions. Interests comprise the high and low frequency modes of motion, the fatigue loading of the platform and the dynamic behavior of the tendons and risers with focus on vortex induced vibrations. To evaluate these results wind, wave and current conditions are closely monitored. Figure 1: Marco Polo TLPThe monitoring system was in operation during the passage of hurricanes Ivan, Katrina and Rita. Although Marco Polo was extremely close to the center of these severe hurricanes, no significant damage was inflicted to the platform, even though wind speeds in excess of 138 mph and maximum wave heights over 28 m were measured. However, very valuable data was collected on the wave, wind, current, as well as on the response of the TLP during the Hurricane conditions.

As a pilot study into the understanding of the occurrence of extreme waves, the spatial development of an extreme wave (Ac/Hs = 1.59) in a model basin was investigated. This wave occurred in a wave spectrum that was not extremely steep and non-linear. It is observed that the extreme wave develops in less than half the wavelength from a relatively normal wave into an extreme crest. The wave crest stays high and constant over a large distance (almost 75m). Linear dispersion is not able to predict the wave propagation towards the observed extreme wave crest. Second order theory improves the prediction of the crest amplitude, but not enough. The crest amplitude is still underestimated. This is confirmed by the plots of the probability of extremes. The linear Rayleigh distribution underestimates the crest amplitudes. The second order distribution follows the measurements much better, but also in this case typically the highest 10 crests in a 3 hours storm are underestimated.
