The paper attempts to examine the current trends of artisanal fisheries practices in inland waters of Nigeria. The paper discussed the potentials of inland fisheries resources, its advantages and the pressure on inland fisheries resources of Nigeria. Despites efforts by relevant agencies, bodies and institutions through regulations, control and monitoring, Unsustainable fisheries practices such as overfishing, use of destructive and damaging fishing methods as well as illegal, unregulated and unreported fisheries practices are still common practices among artisanal fishers in Nigeria. There is low adherence and compliance to fisheries regulations and sustainable fisheries practices among the artisanal fishers. These unsustainable fisheries practices are threatening the sustainability and benefits of the inland fisheries resources.The paper also highlights the current challenges facing and militating against the sustainable development of artisanal fisheries in Nigeria, fisheries sustainability objectives and ecosystem effects of fishing. There is need for swift adoption and implementation of measures that will ensure sustainable exploitation, development and management of the inland fisheries resources of Nigeria. The paper recommends the need for enlightenment campaign on sustainable fisheries practices, regular programmers of overfished and depleted water bodies and integrates artisanal fishers as key stakeholders in fisheries policy formulation, management. Diversifying or providing an alternative source of income for the artisanal fishers would reduce the pressure on the resources by engaging in non-fishing activities. The need to strictly implement the newly enacted Inland fisheries Act, 2014 cannot be overemphasized.

The changes that have taken place in Nigerian fisheries are reviewed. Artisanal fishery has continued to dominate the fisheries, contributing over 85% of total fish production. The inland water and coastal seas are fully exploited and the increase in fishery production is not likely. Aquaculture potentials remain untapped as much as deep-sea fisheries. The combined potential of the fisheries resources-freshwater, marine and aquaculture can meet over 90% of the nation's demand for fish. Opportunities for investments, therefore, exist in the various subsectors, especially in the areas of storage, processing and preservation for the capture fishery and fish seed multiplication for aquaculture.

This paper analyses the financial performances in terms of productivity and profitability indices and environmental sustainability with regards to Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY) through the application of the Gordon-Schaefer Model for the coldwater Primary Fishermen Cooperative Society (PFCS). For this purpose, data has been collected from the secondary sources for the periods 2013-14 to 2018-19. The panel data analysis was carried out to derived the results using the method of ordinary least squares. The study found that PFCS such as Sribadam, Maneybong-Sopakha and Mangshilla have performed better in financial management but there is a probability of thread of sustainability in the future because in some of the periods their actual yield surpasses the MSY. On the other hand, PFCS like Rimbik, Chujachen and Dalep have not been able to bring their financial performances up to the mark because they were more concerned for sustainability. Excessive extraction of fishes from the water bodies for higher profit motive may lead to less availability for the coming generations. The study suggests that in aquaculture or fish farming, there should maintain an equilibrium between financial benefits and environmental sustainability and the resource should be utilised on a sustainable basis.
