The Mealtime Assessment Scale (MAS): Part 2 – Preliminary Psychometric Analysis

Abstract: Aims: The Mealtime Assessment Scale (MAS) was developed to assess swallowing safety and efficacy during the meal. The study aims to perform a preliminary validation of MAS by investigating internal consistency, inter-rater agreement, concurrent and known-group validity, and responsiveness. Methods: MAS was tested on 100 persons without dysphagia (group 1) and 100 persons with dysphagia (group 2). Fifty subjects were simultaneously evaluated at mealtime using MAS by two independent clinicians to test inter-rate… Show more

“…The swallowing assessment included a fiberoptic endoscopic examination of swallowing (FEES), an assessment of the oral phase efficiency using the Test of Masticating and Swallowing Solids (TOMASS) [10], and a meal observation assessed through the Mealtime Assessment Scale (MAS) [11]. FEES was conducted with liquids (5–10–20 ml of blue‐dyed water × 3 trials for each volume; International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative [IDDSI] = 0 [12]; <50 mPa·s at 50 s ‐1 and 300 s ‐1 ), semisolids (5–10–20 ml of pudding × 3 trials for each volume; IDDSI = 4; 2583.3 ± 10.41 mPa·s at 50 s ‐1 and 697.87 ± 7.84 mPa·s at 300 s ‐1 ), and solids (half biscuit × 2 trials; IDDSI = 7, regular).…”
