The mechanism of adhesion and graft polymerization of a PNIPAAm thermoresponsive hydrogel to polypropylene meshes

Abstract: In this study, a commercial and fully flexible monofilament mesh has been used for the deposition of a thermosensitive hydrogel, generated by graft copolymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) and N,N′-methylene bis(acrylamide) (MBA) monomers.

“…Following the previous results, 11 in this section, we prove that the control of the polymerization time is of fundamental relevance to get not only iPP fibres with hydrogel covalently bonded to the PP matrix, but also with mesh pores free of hydrogel. Like in Section 3.1, the effects of the grafting time on the gel deposition and morphology were examined by using optical microscopy and SEM.…”

“…The pristine Optilene s Mesh LP was first activated with oxygen plasma (plasma power 250 W, purging pressure of 0.07 mbar, gas flow fixed for 180 s and 20 sccm). 11 After plasma treatment, all samples were stored under vacuum for a few days, if not used immediately for the deposition of the soft hydrogel PNIPAAm.…”

“…Additionally, plasma can easily treat objects with complex geometries and high surface areas. Numerous studies have therefore explored plasma surface treatments for surgical meshes (Avetta et al, 2014;Binnebösel et al, 2012Binnebösel et al, , 2010Gorgieva et al, 2015;Hu et al, 2017;Junge et al, 2007;Kulaga et al, 2014;Kumar et al, 2013;Labay et al, 2015;Lanzalaco et al, 2019;Lu et al, 2019;Nisticò et al, 2017Nisticò et al, , 2015Nisticò et al, , 2013Nisticò et al, , 2012Paul et al, 2010;Rivolo et al, 2016;Sanbhal et al, 2019Sanbhal et al, , 2018bSannino et al, 2005;Zhang et al, 2014).…”
