The mechanism of cure of tetraglycidyl diaminodiphenyl methane with diaminodiphenyl sulfone

Abstract: The curing reaction of tetraglycidyl diaminodiphenyl methane (TGDDM) with diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) has been investigated using differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform IR spectroscopy, and ESR spin trapping techniques. A mechanism has been proposed, and the cure kinetics has been obtained at 177°C. The major conclusion is that cure proceeds mainly through chain extension, while crosslinking occurs through the reaction of hydroxyl groups with epoxides, resulting in formation of ether linkages.

“…Curing kinetics of epoxy resins have been studied with different techniques, such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), [17][18][19] near-IR, 20 and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). [21][22][23][24][25][26] However, the curing kinetics of epoxy resins during nanocomposite formation have been less studied.…”

“…FTIR spectroscopy is suitable 1,2 for following the variations occurring in such a material when it is submitted to a curing process [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10] to completion. The present work deals with crosslinking of the acid copolymer/diglycidylether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) system as followed by FTIR.…”
