The Mechanism of Moxibustion: Ancient Theory and Modern Research

Abstract: The moxibustion has a dual effect of tonification and purgation in TCM theories, which are based on two aspects: the actions of the meridian system and the roles of moxa and fire. Modern research works of the moxibustion mechanism mainly relate to the thermal effects, radiation effects, and pharmacological actions of moxa and its combustion products. Experimental results showed that moxibustion thermal stimulation affects both shallow and deep tissues of the skin, and the warm-heat effects of moxibustion have … Show more

“…For the treatment of allergic diseases, moxibustion is convenient, produces a stable long-term effect, and decreases the severity of relapse. In TCM theory, moxibustion can warm the channels and stimulate the self-repairing capability of the meridian systems, thus facilitating vital qi and regulating zangfu function to improve constitution for the prevention and treatment of AR [28].…”

“…Many research articles have investigated the effects these strategies can have when combined. However, there is very limited evidence of moxibustion being used alone [4]. Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese method that is "a therapeutic heat that permeates the skin and affects the flow of "qi" (energy) and blood in the area being treated".…”
