The microfilament cytoskeleton plays a vital role in salt and osmotic stress tolerance in Arabidopsis

Abstract: Although recent studies have suggested that the microfilament (MF) cytoskeleton of plant cells participates in the response to salt stress, it remains unclear as to whether the MF cytoskeleton actually plays an active role in a plant's ability to withstand salt stress. In the present study, we report for the first time the role of MFs in salt tolerance of Arabidopsis thaliana. Our experiments revealed that Arabidopsis seedlings treated with 150 mm NaCl maintained MF assembly and bundle formation, whereas treat… Show more

“…Photosynthetic rate (A) and stomatal conductance (gs) expanded by seed treatment of GR24. Improvement in photosynthesis process is a comprehensive outcome of increased CO2 fixation and assimilation and light use efficiency (Wang et al, 2010). However, in our experiment seed treatment showed very slight effect on photosynthetic efficiency.…”

“…Actin filaments and microtubules function in a network for numerous cellular processes such as salt response [65]. In Arabidopsis, salinity can induce the assembly and bundle formation of actin filaments, but long term salt causes de-polymerization of actin filaments [65].…”

“…Their important functions are to help the cell with support, shape, and movement. Though there is little report about the involvement of the cytoskeleton in abiotic stress, 11 but it's well-known that the change of stomatal conductance is a very important measure for plants to adapt abiotic stress, and the stomatal movement depends on the cytoskeleton. Recently, cytoskeleton was reported to response to high temperature according to cell reconstruction.…”
