The Millennium Galaxy Catalogue: the B-band attenuation of bulge and disc light and the implied cosmic dust and stellar mass densities

Abstract: Based on our sample of 10 095 galaxies with bulge–disc decompositions we derive the empiricalBMGC‐band internal attenuation–inclination relation for galaxy discs and their associated central bulges. Our results agree well with the independently derived dust models of Tuffs et al., leading to a direct constraint on the mean opacity of spiral discs of τfB= 3.8 ± 0.7 (central face‐on BMGC‐band opacity). Depending on inclination, the BMGC‐band attenuation correction varies from 0.2 to 1.1 mag for discs and from 0.… Show more

“…Figure 41: Cosmic abundance of dust, relative to cosmological critical density, Ω dust , against redshift as determined from the CIB power spectrum (Thacker et al, 2013) compared to measurements in the literature using the low-redshift dust mass function , optical extinction of SDSS (Ménard et al, 2010;Ménard & Fukugita, 2012;Fukugita, 2011;Fukugita & Peebles, 2004) and 2DF (Driver et al, 2007) galaxies and quasars. This figure is reproduced from Thacker et al (2013) with permission from the authors and AAS.…”

“…The dust density of SMGs at z < 0.5 (Col. 9 of Table 1) is approximately 3% of the total local (0.013 < z < 0.18) dust budget of log ρ dust = 5.57 +0.12 −0.17 M Mpc −3 given by Driver et al (2007) based on an assumed dust-to-light ratio. Therefore SMGs contribute very little to the dust budget at low redshifts.…”

“…Marulli et al (2013) investigated the dependence of galaxy clustering on luminosity and stellar mass in the redshift range 0.5 < z < 1.1 using the ongoing VIMOS Public Extragalactic Survey (VIPERS). Based on their sample of 10095 galaxies, Driver et al (2007) estimated the stellar mass densities at redshift zero amounting to 8.6 h −1 ± 0.6 × 10 8 M⊙/M pc 3 . We use this local value as our measure of the mass density in the comoving frame and use it for our subsequent calculations.…”
