The modulatory effects of ellagic acid and vitamin E succinate on TCDD‐induced oxidative stress in different brain regions of rats after subchronic exposure

Abstract: The effects of ellagic acid (EA) and vitamin E succinate (VES) on 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD)-induced oxidative stress in different brain regions of rats have been studied after subchronic exposure to the compounds. TCDD was administered to groups of rats at a dose of 46 ng/kg/day for 90 days. EA and VES were administered to groups of rats, either separately or simultaneously with TCDD, every other day for 90 days. At the end of the treatment period, animals were sacrificed and brains were disse… Show more

“…Along with the reduction in GSH content, activities of various enzymic antioxidants such as SOD, CAT, GST and GPx were also found to be significantly decreased during TCDD treatment. These results are in line with the earlier reports where TCDDinduced oxidative stress is mediated through an imbalance in antioxidant status (Stohs 1990;Hassoun et al 2004;Jin et al 2008). From the results it is evident that oxidative stress acts as a major contributor in the TCDD-induced nephrotoxic effects.…”

“…They exert many health-promoting effects (7), including antioxidant activity (8) or the inhibition of the growth of cancer cells in culture (9). Ellagic acid (ELA) is a phenolic compound presenting a variety of biological activities including potent antioxidant (10), anticancer (11), and antimutagen (12) properties. Resveratrol, a naturally occurring phytoalexin, associated with many health benefits, most notably the mitigation of age-related diseases, including neurodegeneration, carcinogenesis, and atherosclerosis (13,14).…”
