The most northern record of Gervais' beaked whale, Mesoplodon europaeus (Gervais, 1855), for the Southern Hemisphere

Abstract: -This paper reports the most northern record of Mesoplodon europaeus for the southern hemisphere based on a specimen of beaked whale that stranded on Bitupitá Beach (02°53'94"S; 41°16'41"W), on the northeastern coast of Brazil, on 23 November 2001. Identification of this individual was based on the position of the two mandibular teeth in the lower jaw. The teeth were flattened laterally, embedded in the lower jaw at the mandibular symphysis, and located posterior to the middle of the jaw. Until recently, the d… Show more

“…The first report of cetacean strandings at Ceará state (Alves-Júnior et al , 1996) documented 14 cetacean species. Another five species were recorded after 1996, including northernmost records of the Gervais' beaked whale, Mesoplodon europaeus (Martins et al , 2004) and Antarctic minke whale, Balaenoptera bonaerensis (Meirelles & Furtado-Neto, 2004) in the south-western Atlantic, the first record of the Fraser's dolphin, Lagenodelphis hosei , in north-eastern Brazil (Barros et al , 2001), and the first strandings of B. acutorostrata (Meirelles et al , in press), pygmy sperm whale, Kogia breviceps , killer whale, Orcinus orca , and spinner dolphin Stenella longirostris (this paper) in Ceará.…”

“…infecting this cetacean in Brazil. The geographical distribution of M. europaeus was expanded recently to South Atlantic waters (Culik, 2010) after stranding reports on the Brazilian coast (Santos et al , 2003; Martins et al , 2004), minimizing the possibility of accidental occurrence of this species in the littoral of this country. The present data are coherent with the phylogeny tanglegram of Anisakis sp.…”

“…The Gervais' beaked whale, Mesoplodon europaeus , occurs mainly in North Atlantic waters, but its distribution has been extended to the South Atlantic Ocean following stranding reports on the Brazilian coast (Santos et al , 2003; Martins et al , 2004). The only anisakid species that has been reported infecting this whale is A. ziphidarum (Cavallero et al , 2011).…”
