Imazethapyr herbicide (pursuit*) singly or combined with urea fertilizer on mitotic activity, inducation of mitotic and meiotic abnormalities and changes in the M2 seed storage protein banding patterns has been investigated on Vicia faba plants. A significant reduction in mitotic index was induced after different treatment in both forms (singly or combined). A variety of chromosomal abnormalities were observed in both mitotic and meiotic divisions respresented by stickiness, disturbance, laggards, bridges, multipolar, C-metaphase, breaks and micro and multinuclei. The frequency of these types of abnormalities decrease in case of pursuit herbicide combined with urea fertilizer. Electrophoretic analysis showed that pursuit and its combination with urea has a great ability to induce changes in the protein banding patterns of Vida faba seed storage protein as compared with untreated samples being more pronounced in treatment with the herbicide singly.

Paternal exposure to pesticides and congenital malformations Scand J Work Environ Health 1998;24(6):473-480.Objectives A case-referent study with 261 matched pairs was carried out in 8 hospitals of Comunidad Valenciana, Spain, to assess the relation between occupatioilal cxposure to pesticides and selccted congenital malfor~nations. In this paper, the rcsults concerning patcnlal exposure are presented. MethodsThe parents of the case patients and the referents were interviewed to collect inforination about exposure to pesticides and potential confounding variables. Detailed information on direct involve~nent in the handling of pesticides was collected for the interviewees involved in agricultural activities during a previously defined period in relation to conception and pregnancy. Exposure data were reviewed by 2 experts who assigned ordinal scores for the probability and intensity of exposure to pesticide classes and active ingredients. ResultsThe dichotoinous analysis of exposure (absent, present) yiclded some increased risks, although not statistically significant, for aliphatic hydrocarbons [adjusted odds ratio (adjusted OR) 2.05, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 0.62-6.801, inorganic compounds (adjusted OR 2.02, 95% CI 0.53-7.72), and glufosinate (adjusted OR 2.45, 95% CI 0.78-7.70), and a significant association for pyridil derivatives (adjusted OR 2.77, 95% CI 1.19-6.44). The analysis bascd on the experts' scores (2 levels of exposure) showed some consistent associations for these compounds.C O~~~U S~O~S This research indicates a possible risk of congenital malformations for paternal exposure to some pesticides, notably, pyridils, aliphatic hydrocarbons, inorganic compounds, and glufosinate. It did not find an increased risk for paternal exposure to pesticides in the classes of organophosphates, carbamates, organochlorines, chloroalkylthio fungicides and organosulfurs. These findings warrant further investigation.

In this study, two agricultural synthetic insecticides were examined for their genotoxic and cytotoxic effects on root tip cells of Allium cepa, namely, Emar non-systemic Insecticide, which is used to eliminate worms on rodents, and Confidor Systemic insecticide that targets sucking insects.Two concentrations (0.2 and 0.1 ml/L) of Emar and one concentration (0.15 ml/L) of Confidor were used for four different time periods (8, 12, 16 and 24 h); tested dosages were assessed for genotoxic and cytotoxic effects to mitotic chromosomes of Allium cepa root tip cells. The results indicate that both insecticides were genotoxic, as they decrease the mitotic index and increase chromosomal aberration. The observed effects were significant after treatment with 0.1 ml/L and 0.2 ml/L of Emare; also, treament with 0.15 ml/L of Confidor was significant at p>0.05 and cytotoxic, especially after treatment for a long time (16, 24 h). The types of chromosome aberration observed were stickiness, distributed, C-metaphase, C-anaphase, lagging chromosome, binucleate cell and bridge.
