The National Institutes of Health measure of Healing Experience of All Life Stressors (NIH-HEALS): Factor analysis and validation

Abstract: Two hundred patients with severe and/or life-threatening disease were recruited form the NIH Clinical Center and participated in the validation of the NIH-HEALS, which included exploratory factor analysis, principal component analysis, reliability, convergent validity, and divergent validity analyses. Item-reducing principal components analysis and internal consistency and split-half reliability demonstrated excellent internal consistency and split-half reliability (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.89, split-half reliabil… Show more

“…7,8 Notably, the results of LTCs expanded beyond the circumstances of the illness and positively impacted other difficult life situations such as divorce or career change. 7,8 These LTCs are hypothesized to comprise the process of psycho-social-spiritual healing 9 and are similar to other concepts described in the literature, such as posttraumatic growth and benefit finding. [10][11][12] Gender is an important factor in psychosocial and spiritual distress and well-being in patient populations.…”

“…This questionnaire has strong internal consistency (Cronbach's a = 0.89) and stable factor structure, and its convergent and divergent validity have been confirmed. 9 Factor analysis of the NIH-HEALS supported a three-factor structure, that is, Connection, Reflection & Introspection, and Trust & Acceptance.…”

“…Religion refers to a person's faith‐based beliefs and subsequent religious practices. While spirituality can involve religious practices, it is more extensive (Yazgan & Demir, ) and involves constructs such as Connection to a higher power and social connection to friends and family, Reflection and Introspection , including finding meaning in activities, nature and art, and Trust and Acceptance – which involves accepting what is (Ameli et al, ). Academics are still divided over how these two constructs should be defined.…”
