The National Pork Producers Council Maternal Line National Genetic Evaluation Program: A comparison of six maternal genetic lines for female productivity measures over four parities1

Abstract: Litter (n = 8,424) and female performance records were collected in two breed-to-wean production units in order to evaluate genetic line differences for sow longevity and maternal performance over four parities. Lines evaluated were American Diamond Genetics, Danbred North America, Dekalb-Monsanto DK44, Dekalb-Monsanto GPK347, Newsham Hybrids, and National Swine Registry. Females within a line were derived from a minimum of 65 sires, 197 dams (three dams per sire), and a maximum of three daughters per dam, exc… Show more

“…Gestation length averaged 112.16 days (60.08 days) in our F 2 crossbred population (Table 1), a value smaller than the ones described in Asian pig breeds crossed with Westtype breeds (113.0 to 113.7 days; Young, 1995 and1998) as well as in West-type populations (113.5 to 114.5 days; Cassady et al, 2002;Leenhouwers et al, 2003), and clearly shorter than the 116.1 days reported by Moeller et al (2004). Modal estimates of variance components for gestation length were 0.67, 1.16 and 3.45 for additive genetic, permanent environmental and residual variances, respectively.…”

“…Moreover, 12,599 Thai Landrace sows recorded between's 1993-2005, TNB and SB was 10.03+2.64 and 0.21+0.59, respectively (Imboonta et al, 2007). While, Moeller et al (2004Moeller et al ( ) stated between's 1997Moeller et al ( -1999 that TNB was 11.05+1.49 pigs with range 1-25 pigs, and NBA was 9.96+1.38 pigs with range 0-21 pigs.…”

“…The piglet number and its related traits were decline on subsequent parity (Imboonta et al, 2007). Here, TCTC haplotype was significantly focused on SB that were due to effects of uterine environment in late gestation, length of the farrowing period, and management at parturition, that may result in SB pigs (Moeller et al, 2004). Iron deficiency, however, is asscociated with an increased incidence of SB in pigs (Moore et al, 1965).…”
