The coronavirus pandemic, which first impacted European societies in early 2020, has created a twofold crisis by combining a health threat with economic turmoil. While the crisis has affected all European societies very significantly, its impact varies across countries, social groups, and societal domains. In an effort to provide a first overview of the effect of the coronavirus crisis, in this editorial we discuss contributions of 58 papers published as part of this special issue. These early research papers illustrate the varied impact of the pandemic on various areas of social life. The first group of studies in this special issue analyzes the effect of the pandemic on social inequalities with respect to gender, ethnic otherness, education, and work. A second stream of research focuses on the psychological consequences of the pandemic, especially with respect to wellbeing and resilience. Thirdly, the crisis is discussed on a societal level, in regard to welfare states, social policies, and approaches to crisis governance. In a fourth line of inquiry, several studies have analyzed the impact of the pandemic on social solidarity and cohesion. A fifth strand of research is devoted to examining the role of culture and lifestyles. This review ends with a discussion of areas for future research trajectories.

The COVID-19 pandemic has spread throughout the globe affecting countries worldwide. However, several differences have been observed in the number of daily new cases, the COVID-19 reproduction rate, and the severity of the disease in different countries. Previous studies have mostly highlighted government restriction policies to mitigate the pandemic effects as reasons for such differences. This study focuses on 101 countries and proposes that each country's cultural background is also accountable for such differences. We considered the six Hofstede's cultural dimensions (power distance, individualism, masculinity, uncertainty avoidance, long term orientation, and indulgence) and statistically analyzed their correlation with several COVID-19 impact metrics in comparison to several restriction policies. Our results support our claim that national culture influences both acceptance and subsequent adoption of restriction policies and the implementation by each government of those policies. We highlight that the attitudes towards and trust in political institutions, policies and governance is influenced by the cultural background, which is reflected in the pandemic numbers. As a main takeaway from this study, we conclude that data-driven models which aim at predicting the pandemic impact evolution at a global scale should also include variables that reflect the cultural background of each nation.

The article covers the analytical consideration of the cognitive strategies, which reflect the specific of sociophilosophical, sociological, political and cultural approaches to the study of controversial changes in everyday cultural practices in conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic. It emphasizes the scientific significance of specialized researches of the "quarantine life" phenomena and the problems of personal and collective social restrictions by people who try to overcome the pandemic risks and dangers in conditions of the forced self-isolation. The communicative risks and directions of the political institutions activities — their role, functions in overcoming of the pandemic destructive social consequences have been identified and analyzed in the article. The author proves the importance of the scientific evaluations of the civilized and democratization “levels” existing in different societies as well as the activities by the state’s repressive and control institutions which are directed to the individual citizen or group of citizens. The article argues that the situations of the restrictions of the cultural interactions, everyday communications and the human face-to-face contacts constitute the new contradictions of the everyday culture, human behavior, consumption and entertaining. It substantiates the significance of the collective efforts for humanization of the social control mechanisms under conditions of the forced quarantine restrictions and the different forms of human isolation.
