High-performance fibers developed since the 1960s have a wide range of applications including firefighters' protective clothing. Firefighters' protective clothing made of inherently flame-resistant high-performance fibers offers excellent protection in the new condition. However, these fibers experience aging as any polymer material. The situation is amplified due to the severe conditions associated with the firefighters' activities. And the consequences of a loss in the performance of the protective clothing can be dramatic for the firefighter's safety. This article provides a comprehensively review of the aging behavior of high-performance fibers used in firefighters' protective clothing. Residual performance data have been identified both for used firefighter garments as well as fabric specimens subjected to accelerated aging. Research shows that different aging conditions affect the different fibers to a different degree. The specific conditions in which the aging is applied also affects the outcome in terms of loss in performance. Techniques successfully used to quantify the effect of aging on the performance of fire-resistant fabrics are also briefly mentioned.Finally, the knowledge gained from this analysis of the literature as well as research gaps and further areas of investigation are discussed in this neglected yet critical topic of firefighters' protective clothing aging.

In the recent era of development, the global market for the sportswear textile manufacturing industries has increased with the increase in consumption of active sportswear. The sportswear manufacturers not only focused on the market trends but also focused on material diversification with technology enhancement. The performance characteristics of active sportswear directly influence comfort level and athletic performance during sports activities. Different types of sportswear products require different performance characteristics. Appropriate moisture and heat management are the key factors for the endowment of the required physiological comfort level. In highly engineered textile-based sports goods, special characteristics are incorporated in the polymer/fibers/product manufacturing procedures/finishing techniques to obtain the maximum performance and comfort level. In this review paper current market trends, highly engineered polymers, fibers, fabrics, finishes, nanomaterials, and the recent developments in the manufacturing techniques of sportswear are illustrated.

As chemical fiber filaments diameter variation directly affects spinning quality, spinning condition monitoring becomes more and more important in an intelligent manufacturing environment. Firstly, based on the single-slit Fraunhofer diffraction model and the Babinet principle, the non-contact filaments diffraction model is developed to generate diffraction fringe patterns by irradiating chemical fiber filaments with He-Ne laser. Secondly, for the characteristics of diffraction fringe patterns, a segmentation mask window-based diffraction fringe center of gravity extraction method is proposed, and a zero-phase Butterworth low-pass filter is designed and applied to the diffraction light intensity curves to accurately extract the extreme points positions of the adjacent dark fringe and calculate the diameter information. Finally, the non-contact chemical fiber filaments appearance diameter online inspection experiment platform is built to carry out static and dynamic experiments of filaments. The experimental results show that the maximum absolute value of absolute error is less than 1.1 μm for static measurement and less than 10 μm for dynamic measurement.
