ABSTRACT:The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of an activity set developed according to the inquiry-based learning approach in the unit "Particulate Structure of Matter" on students' competence for learnıng science. The study was conducted with 42 sixth grade students attending two sixth grade classes of a secondary school. In this study, pre-test and posttest control group experimental designs were used. The findings of the study revealed that science and technology learning supported with the guided activities developed in line with the inquirybased learning approach have no significant effects on students' competence for learning science, but have significant effects some competence scale for learning science sub-dimension.Keywords: competence for learning science, guiding activity set, inquiry-based learning approach, the particulate structure of matter
Extended AbstractPurpose and Significance: The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of an activity set developed according to the inquiry-based learning approach in the unit "Particulate Structure of Matter" on students' Competence for learning science. When the studies in the related literature are examined, is seen that though there are many studies focusing on the effects of inquiry-based science activities on elementary and high school students' science process skills (Erdoğan, 2005;Sullivan, 2008;Şimşek & Kabapınar, 2010;Tatar, 2006;Wu & Hsieh, 2006;Wu & Krajcik 2006), academic achievement (Akpullukçu 2011; Armstrong, 2007; Bağcaz, 2009;Marx et al. 2004; Sensoy, 2009;Tatar, 2006; Wallace, Tsoi, Calke, & Darley, 2003), attitudes (Akpullukçu 2011;Küçüker, 2008;McDonald, 2004;Tatar, 2006), motivation (McPhedran, 2006), critical thinking skills (Evren, 2012;McDonald, 2004), reasoning and discussion (Gillies et al., 2013), understand concepts about the nature of science (Khishfe ve Abd-El-Khalick, 2002), although many studies on the learning-based approach to research, there is no study looking at the effect of inquiry-based teaching on students' competence for learning science. In this connection, demonstration of how to use inquiry-based activities in science and technology classes and eliciting the effect of * The aforementioned guide material was developed by the researcher within the PhD thesis. ** Corresponding Author: Assist.
