The New MNE: ‘Orchestration’ Theory as Envelope of ‘Internalisation’ Theory

Abstract: We propose an orchestration theory of the (new) MNE as an envelope of internalisation theory and its variants. We first critically assess extant varieties of internalisation theory of the MNE. We then discuss their limitations and explain why it is important to move from internalisation to an orchestration theory of the MNE. Orchestration theory, rooted in and encompassing the dynamic capabilities framework, helps explain a number of MNE phenomena that challenge internalisation theory, including entrepreneursh… Show more

“…The structural reshaping of globalization value chain activities across several countries, each with only partial access to the firm's overall technological reservoir, much in line with Gooris & Peeters (2016). Managing for knowledge buffering across fragmented institutional environments places a great weight on the orchestration capabilities and leadership skills of the MNE's top managers (Pitelis and Teece, 2018). The requirements for such capabilities increase exponentially with higher embeddedness in multiple locations and institutional contexts.…”

“…Internalization theory for the digital economy modularity as a measure of the ease with which a firm's FSAs can be integrated or bundled with the assets of potential local partners. This fusing of foreign and local firms' FSAs in new ways to create innovative capabilities leads to a recombinant advantage that undergirds the competitive advantage of the MNC (Collinson & Narula, 2014;Pitelis & Teece, 2018). This also helps to overcome the location-boundedness of some FSAs, if they are highly embedded in the organization or environment or specific to the market (Rugman & Verbeke, 2004).…”

“…The IB literature is rich with examples of semi-permeable advantages -e.g., brands, distribution and marketing advantages -and provides useful priors to build on. The pervasiveness of the network architecture in an MNC paves ways for better knowledge governance in an MNC, bringing the study of ''orchestration'' roles feasible and useful (Dhanaraj & Parkhe, 2006;Pitelis & Teece, 2018).…”

“…Markets and hierarchies are viewed as diametrically opposed means of efficiently coordinating interdependent actors with at least partly conflicting interests. In the context of building an international organization, of entering or maintaining positions in foreign markets, and coordinating global business activities, the general decision problem of make or buy, of producing services and goods internally within an organization or through using external exchange partners is put into an international, cross-border context (Pitelis & Teece, 2018). In the wake of the seminal dissertation of Hymer (1976), many economists and management scholars have applied economic theories, namely internalization theory and transaction cost economics (e.g., Buckley & Casson, 2009;Hennart, 1988;2019) Figure 1 A comprehensive framework of IJV research topics.…”
