“…At present, 52 autochthonous fish species and sub-species plus four lampreys occur in Polish inland waters (Witkowski et al 2004). Additionally, 26 exotic species were recorded as acclimatized, casual or naturalized in Poland and 19 of them live permanently in the wild, constituting 24 % of the country's freshwater fish fauna (Grabowska et al 2010;Witkowski and Grabowska 2012). Some of these species depend on stocking, while only 11 species have established self-sustained populations in the wild and among those, seven have never been introduced intentionally.…”

“…The crucian carp is included in the least concern IUCN category but is regarded as disappearing in many water bodies of its range ( Freyhof and Kottelat 2008 ). The area of distribution of this species in Poland decreased during the last two decades ( Witkowski and Grabowska 2012 ). In recent years, interspecific hybrids have been frequently recorded between the crucian carp and the introduced Prussian carp Carassius gibelio (Bloch, 1782), the goldfish Carassius auratus (Linnaeus, 1758) and the common carp Cyprinus carpio Linnaeus, 1758 ( Sayer et al 2011 , Wouters et al 2012 , Mezhzherin et al 2012 , Rylková et al 2013 ).…”

“…In consequence, the Prussian carp, as well as its hybrids can easily replace other fish species. It may have a negative impact on the European ichthyofaunaaffecting the overall range, distribution and abundance of commercially and recreationally valuable fish (Richardson, Whoriskey, & Roy, 1995;Witkowski & Grabowska, 2012).…”
