The nondermatophyte molds: Emerging as leading cause of onychomycosis in south-east Rajasthan

Abstract: Background:Onychomycosis is a fungal disease of the nail apparatus caused by both dermatophytic and nondermatophytic strains. Treatment involves long duration antifungal therapy. However, long treatment duration without identifying the causative species may lead to resistance. Confirmation of diagnosis and speciation by culture before administering antifungal therapy is ideal.Aims:To study the clinical and epidemiological aspects of onychomycosis in Hadoti region (south-east Rajasthan) and identify various myc… Show more

“…However, the role of non-dermatophytic moulds (NDMs) in onychomycosis has been recognized as early as the 1960s 3 . A review of the recently published medical literature has shown that NDMs are emerging as causative agents of onychomycosis and in some reports, have even overtaken dermatophytes as the most prevalent causes of onychomycosis 4 . Onychomycosis, like other cutaneous (i.e.…”

“…Maximum numbers of patients were in the age group of 20 -50 years [ Figure 3] which is also seen in most of the researches. [17,18,20,21] The reason of high prevalence in this group may be their more active life style and involvement in outdoor activities. Farmers, dairy or poultry workers [ Figure 4] were most affected which may be due to their close contact with soil and animals.…”

“…Figure 3] is greater than most other studies but is comparable to studies carried in Shimla, [9,[11][12][13][14][15][16][17] Central India and Rajasthan. [18][19][20][21][22] This high Male: Female ratio may be because females in rural area avoid visiting health facilities until their condition begins affecting their work and home made remedies have failed to provide relief. Age range of patients varied from 3 months to 81 years.…”

“…The first two cultures were incubated at 25˚C under aerobic conditions and observed for growth in each day of the next 2-4 weeks [11]. The chromogenic candida agar medium was incubated at 37˚C under aerobic conditions and observed for growth in each day of the next 48-72 hours [12].…”
