In 1949, Norwegian social democratic representations of Zionism and Israel shifted from mere support to idealisation. Despite the existence of an increasingly voluminous literature on the European left and Zionism, idealisation of Israel has never previously been explained as distinct from more general support. Regarding the Norwegian case, this article argues that idealisation differed from mere support in its implicit message about the status of ‘civilisation’. Support for Zionism in 1947–8 had been founded on the notion that Europeans needed to ensure the survival of the Jews in a Jewish state in order for European civilisation itself to survive. The idealisation of Israel that emerged from 1949 implicitly argued that Israel proved the attainability of the civilisational ideal and removed from European shoulders the obligation to ensure civilisation's survival. For the Norwegian labour movement, the 1949 decision to make Norway a founding member of NATO contributed to making idealisation of Israel particularly desirable.

Det er allment akseptert i forskningen at støtte til Israel på den europeiske venstresiden i den tidlige etterkrigstiden var et resultat av bevisstheten om nazistenes folkemord mot jøder. Men hva betyr det? Denne artikkelen hevder at det, i motsetning til en fremstilling som har blitt autoritativ blant norske historikere, ikke var slik at norske sosialdemokraters pro-sionisme skyldtes at man på grunn av folkemordet konsekvent satte «hensynet til jødene» først. Kunnskap om folkemordet var utbredt blant sosialdemokrater allerede fra 1942. Artikkelen viser at dette ikke førte til noen prioritering av jødiske interesser, verken under okkupasjonen eller høsten 1945, og at denne kunnskapen heller ikke i denne perioden ga opphav til andre ideer som kan karakteriseres som forløpere for den senere pro-sionismen. Snarere forklarer artikkelen norske sosialdemokraters pro-sionistiske vending med referanse til ideer om sivilisasjonen, og dens skjørhet, som var utbredte i arbeiderbevegelsen. Sivilisasjonens skjørhet var etablert som tema langt tidligere, men frem til frigjøringen ble trusselen mot sivilisasjonen ansett for å komme utelukkende fra nazismen. Antisemittismens fortsettelse i det frigjorte Europa skapte imidlertid, fra tidlig i 1946, en oppfatning av at det etter nazismens fall eksisterte en indre trussel mot sivilisasjonen. Det var denne ideen som lå til grunn for den pro-sionistiske erklaeringen fra Arbeiderbladets utenriksredaktør i januar 1947: For å sikre sivilisasjonens overlevelse hadde europeere en plikt til å støtte jødene i deres bestrebelser for å overleve ved å danne en jødisk stat.
