The Optical Alignment System of the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer Endcaps

Abstract: The muon spectrometer of the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN consists of 1182 muon chambers for precision track measurements, arranged in three concentric cylinders in the barrel region, and in four wheels in each of the two endcaps. The endcap wheels are located between 7 m and 22 m from the interaction point, and have diameters between 13 m and 24 m. Muon chambers are equipped with a complex optical alignment system to monitor their positions and deformations during ATLAS data-takin… Show more

“…The end-cap chambers and their alignment system [22] were installed and commissioned during 2005-2008, and continuous alignment data-taking with the complete system started in Summer 2008. After commissioning, more than 99% of all alignment sensors were operational, and only a small number failed during the data-taking in 2008.…”

“…right to connector pads ( Fig.2a) where the signal is transmitted to the front-end electronics via an elastomeric connector, avoiding soldering on the boards. Additionally the outer borders include, among other features, crossmark targets for precision holes (Fig.2c), Rasnik Masks [4] for positioning and dimensions control ( Fig.2b), alignment targets and a HV supply line including space for HV filters per side ( Fig.2e).…”

“…Two alignment systems [7,8] are provided for the barrel and the endcap chambers, respectively. In the barrel region the alignment is performed via custom RASNIK optical modules, each one containing a camera, a light source, a coded mask and a lens.…”
