The outcomes of children with tracheostomy in a tertiary care pediatric intensive care unit in Turkey

Abstract: Amacımız üçüncü basamak Çocuk Yoğun Bakım Birimi'mizde trakeostomi sonuçlarını etkileyen klinik özellikleri tanımlamaktır. Show more

“…Can et al conducted a retrospective analysis of 63 children undergoing tracheostomy in PICU and showed PMV as the common indication for an elective tracheostomy [22]. Our results are consistent with the data reported in earlier studies [1,19,22]. In our patient population, children who underwent tracheostomy were more likely to have their admission diagnosis grouped as neurological and respiratory (25 vs. 23% of all admissions) and less likely as cardiovascular.…”

“…We now perform tracheostomy in children who need PMV because of respiratory failure, besides those who have upper airway abnormalities or chronic illnesses (neurological impairment, congenital heart, and lung diseases) [15]. Our results are consistent with the data reported in earlier studies [1,19,22].…”

“…In the present study, the rate of tracheostomy was 9.1%, which is almost similar to a study by Kamit Can et al [ 8 ]. The tracheostomy rate of units varies from 2 to 7%, but the rate with different co-morbidities is not clear [ 9 11 ].…”

“…The tracheostomy rate of units varies from 2 to 7%, but the rate with different co-morbidities is not clear [ 9 11 ]. The most common indication for tracheostomy in present study was prolonged mechanical ventilation (92%) followed by UAO (8%), which is similar to many recent studies [ 8 11 ]. Douglas et al reported 111 children who underwent tracheostomy and found that the most common indication was prolonged mechanical ventilation (32%) followed by craniofacial anomaly causing UAO (18%) and subglottic stenosis (14%) [ 12 ].…”
