Background:Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has a major impact on health status in accordance with disease severity. It is usually assessed by the various quality of life questionnaires.Objectives:The aim of this study is to assess the disease severity and health status in stable patients of COPD using COPD assessment test (CAT) and clinical COPD questionnaire (CCQ) scores and to correlate with BODE index and its components.Methods:One hundred patients of stable COPD were subjected to CAT, CCQ irrespective of the stage of COPD during their visit. BODE index was also calculated.Results:COPD severity status assessed using forced expiratory volume 1% (FeV1%) predicted values correlated significantly with individual scores (CAT and FeV1%; r = −0.67; P < 0.001 and CCQ and FeV1%; r = 0.61; P < 0.001). CAT and CCQ score also correlated significantly (r = 0.84, P < 0.001) and both with the BODE index (r = 0.80; CAT and r = 0.66; CCQ, P < 0.01). Individual components of BODE index significantly correlated with CAT and CCQ scores.Conclusions:The CAT and CCQ have similar psychometric as well physical properties to assess the health status of COPD patients and can be used as a reliable scientific research tool and can be used in clinical practise to study the disease state and plan an appropriate treatment plan. The BODE index which is more objective, correlated well.

BackgroundThe chronic bronchitis (CB) phenotype has been associated with poor quality of life and an increased risk of disease in patients with COPD. However, little information exists regarding the relationship between the CB phenotype and the COPD assessment test (CAT) score. The goal of this study was to reveal the different pattern of CAT scores between CB and non-CB patients. Moreover, we aimed to investigate whether the CB phenotype is an independently associated factor for more symptom and high-risk groups.MethodsData were obtained from the Korea COPD Subgroup Study cohort recruited from 46 centers in South Korea since April 2012. CB patients were defined as having a chronic cough and sputum for 3 months per year, for a period of 2 consecutive years. We investigated the pattern of CAT and subquestionnaire scores between CB and non-CB patients. We also analyzed the proportion of CB phenotypes in each Global initiative for chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) stage. Finally, we performed a logistic regression analysis to identify whether the CB phenotype was an independently associated factor for more symptom and high-risk groups.ResultsOf the 1,106 study patients, 11.5% of patients were found to have a CB phenotype. CB phenotypes were most common in GOLD III (GOLD 2006) and GOLD D (GOLD 2015) stages. CAT scores were significantly higher in CB patients not only in terms of the total score but also for each subquestionnaire. Logistic regression revealed that the CB phenotype is an independently associated factor for more symptom and high-risk groups.ConclusionThe present study revealed that CB patients have higher CAT scores and subquestionnaire results compared to non-CB patients. Additionally, we demonstrated that the CB phenotype is an independently associated factor for both more symptom and high-risk groups.

Antecedentes: El estudio PLATINO realizado en la Ciudad de México (2003) mostró una prevalencia de EPOC de 7.8%. México no cuenta con información publicada sobre gastos directos e indirectos en salud que realizan los pacientes con EPOC. Objetivo: Estimar los costos directos e indirectos de pacientes con EPOC en un hospital de tercer nivel en México. Material y métodos: Se entrevistó a pacientes con EPOC en cada consulta ambulatoria durante un año. En la entrevista basal preguntamos por los gastos de bolsillo del año previo al reclutamiento. Asimismo, se registraron los costos para el hospital. En este trabajo analizamos los costos anuales en dólares de 2014 previos al reclutamiento de pacientes ambulatorios con ≥ 12 meses de diagnóstico estratifi cando por categorías GOLD. Resultados: Se reclutaron 611 pacientes, de los cuales 484 tuvieron un diagnóstico ≥ 12 meses. La mediana de los costos directos anuales por parte de los pacientes

Abstract: As pre-existent data in the literature (exacerbations and benefit of rehabilitation in COPD), the positive correlations found with BODE index reinforce the discriminative validity of CAT as a complement in the evaluation of what the true impact of COPD is on a patient's daily life.
