“…Such a flexible model, led Wood (2020) to discuss the dimension of variation concerning the theories described by articles recently published in the International Journal for Lesson and Learning Studies. She underscored the importance of a research instruction "being explicit about the theory of learning informing lesson and learning studies and how its implementation leads to teacher learning" (Wood, 2020, p. 93) and raised the question about which theory is the one to underpin Japanese LS.…”

“…According to Lewis (2002Lewis ( , 2009 LS is a "research lesson", where the emphasis is on teaching for understanding instead of teaching as telling (Lewis & Tsuchida, 1998). In the past century, LS has been an important path (Wood, 2019) of enhancing teacher learning (Pêna Trapero, 2013) professional development, and triggering changes in teachers' classroom practice (Vrikki et al, 2017;Warwick et al, 2019). LS gives the teachers a great potential to observe the life and processes in the classroom, particularly regarding students' learning capability, which is subsequently collaboratively analysed (Lewis (2009).…”

“…The traditional pre-tests used in learning studies (e.g. Wood, 2015) have been left out. CA, with its interest in describing the practices and methods participants use when publicly displaying understanding of their own and each other's conduct in the interaction (Schegloff, 2007), contributes with analytic tools when examining the teaching and learning processes that takes place in the enacted teaching.…”
