The Pathological Narcissism Inventory: Measurement Invariance Across Serbian and USA Samples and Further Validation

Abstract: Abstract. The aim of this research was to explore measurement invariance across samples from Serbia and the USA (Study 1) and to further validate the Serbian adaptation of the Pathological Narcissism Inventory – PNI (Study 2). The results supported the original seven-factor first-order structure as well as the hierarchical structure of the PNI with Narcissistic grandiosity and vulnerability as the second-order factors. Further, scalar invariance between the two versions of the PNI was achieved. Relations betwe… Show more

“…Considering both grandiose and vulnerable narcissism share common features of antagonism in more comprehensive three-factor models of narcissism ( Miller et al, 2010 ; Krizan and Herlache, 2018 ; Crowe et al, 2019 ), it was surprising that we did not observe correlations between all of the narcissism measures and agreeableness (only the NPI-13, HSNS EGO, and the g-FLUX were related to agreeableness). Previous evidence linking SB-PNI Vulnerability and agreeableness is mixed ( Dinić and Vujić, 2019 ), suggesting that PNI Vulnerability may be represented by more emotional than interpersonal traits.…”

“…Narcissistic pathology exists on a continuum of severity from normal to pathological within the general population. Both the original PNI [7] and several previous translations of the PNI (e.g., [12,13,57]) were constructed using university student and community dwelling adult samples. However, future validation studies still need to confirm the robustness of the Arabic PNI psychometric qualities in clinical settings.…”

“…As shown in Supplementary Table S1, some studies ( N = 6, 2.6%) examined measurement invariance of the PNI by focusing on gender (Jakšić et al, 2014; Schoenleber et al, 2015 for the PNI—Brief Form; Wright et al, 2010), cross-cultural (Dinić & Vujić, 2020; Wetzel et al, 2020 for the PNI—Brief Form), and age invariance (Somma et al, 2020).…”
