“…Urea, creatinine, NEFA, and glucose were measured spectrophotometrically (Ultrospec IIE, LKB, Biochrom, Cambridge, England) using a commercial colorimetric diagnostic kit (references UR107 for urea, CR510 for creatinine, FA115 for NEFA, and GL2623 for glucose, Randox Laboratories, Crumlin, United Kingdom). Quantitative electrospray tandem MS was used to determine C4 and 3-OH-C4 as described by Zabielski et al (2007). A porcine quantitative sandwich enzyme immunoassay technique was used to analyze IgG (dilution 1:100,000) and IgA (dilution 1:40,000; references A100 to 104 for IgG and A100 to 102 for IgA, Bethyl Laboratories Inc., Montgomery, TX).…”

“…At birth there are many differences between the species in respect to enterocyte morphology and macromolecule absorption ( 87 ) as well as activities of pancreatic trypsin and small-intestinal dipeptidase isoforms, reflecting a greater degree of development in man compared with in pigs. This may be artificially produced by a relatively low bioactive substance intake in farm piglets since the offspring from pregnant and lactating sows fed a diet rich in PUFA ( n -3 fatty acids), plant polyphenols, other antioxidants, taurine and l -carnitine showed a more advanced development of stomach and gut epithelium as compared with untreated controls (Zabielski et al ( 88 ) ; B Bałasin´ska, M Grabowska, J Wilczak, G Kulasek and R Zabielski, unpublished results). However, if a comparison is made between the two species at the more physiologically comparable stage of peak lactation in the mother (about 3 weeks in the piglet and 3 months in the infant), the major enzymes involved in the digestion of milk protein and the other milk components have similar activities in piglets and human infants (Fig.…”

“…For this reason, the sow represented the most important food resource at that moment, having a bigger influence on the piglets' behaviour than dry feed itself [38, 39]. It was already shown that even though creep feed was provided ad libitum , piglets relied mainly on the sow's milk, which provides them not only nutrients but also immunoglobulins, bioactive proteins, and peptides stimulating the development of the stomach and small intestine [40, 41]. By the fact that the piglets were trained in the presence of the sow, it can possibly be explained why the percentage of the piglets around the feeder was not higher than 69% in total.…”
