Functional beverages constitute the rapidly increasing part of the functional food section and represent an area with a wide range of products including herbal-based beverages. We carried out screening investigations of the extracts of 85 Rosaceous tea plants. Among the extracts analyzed Agrimonia asiatica herb extract demonstrated the highest inhibitory activity against the enzyme α-glucosidase (20.29 µg/mL). As a result of chromato-mass-spectrometric profiling of A. asiatica herb with high-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array and electrospray triple quadrupole mass-spectrometric detection (HPLC-PDA-ESI-tQ-MS) 60 compounds were identified, including catechins, ellagitannins, flavones, flavonols, gallotannins, hydroxycinnamates, procyanidins, most for the very first time. The analysis of the seasonal variation of metabolites in A. asiatica herb demonstrated that the phenolic content was highest in summer samples and lower in spring and autumn. HPLC activity-based profiling was utilized to identify compounds of A. asiatica herb with the maximal α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. The most pronounced inhibition of α-glucosidase was observed for agrimoniin, while less significant results of inhibition were revealed for ellagic acid and isoquercitrin. The evaluation of phenolic content in A. asiatica herbal teas with the subsequent determination of α-glucosidase inhibiting potential was discovered. Maximum inhibition of α-glucosidase was observed for hot infusion (75.33 µg/mL) and the minimum for 30 min decoction (159.14 µg/mL). Our study demonstrated that A. asiatica herbal tea is a prospective functional beverage in which dietary intake may help to reduce blood glucose.

Agrimony (Agrimonia eupatoria L.) (Ae) is used in traditional medicine to treat inflammatory and oxidative related diseases. Therefore, this study focuses on the anti-inflammatory and analgesic potential of Ae infusion (AeI). Phenolic compounds characterization was achieved by HPLC-PDA-ESI/MSn. To evaluate antioxidant potential, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), superoxide anion, hydroxyl radical, and SNAP assays were used. In vitro anti-inflammatory activity of AeI was investigated in LPS-stimulated macrophages by measuring the NO production. In vivo anti-inflammatory activity was validated using the mouse carrageenan-induced paw edema model. Peripheral and central analgesic potential was evaluated using the acetic acid-induced writhing and hot-plate tests, respectively, as well as the formalin assay to assess both activities. The safety profile was disclosed in vitro and in vivo, using MTT and hematoxylin assays, respectively. Vitexin, quercetin O-galloyl-hexoside, and kaempferol O-acetyl-hexosyl-rhamnoside were referred to in this species for the first time. AeI and mainly AePF (Ae polyphenolic fraction) showed a significant antiradical activity against all tested radicals. Both AeI and AePF decreased NO levels in vitro, AePF being more active than AeI. In vivo anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities were verified for both samples at concentrations devoid of toxicity. Agrimony infusion and, mainly, AePF are potential sources of antiradical and anti-inflammatory polyphenols.

Cymbopogon citratus, commonly known as lemongrass, is a tropical herb used in worldwide traditional medicine for centuries. Studies previously conducted by our team demonstrated its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, and recently, the antiinflammatory potential was also observed in vivo. However, little is known about its pharmacokinetics. The current study aimed at obtaining, for the first time, the pharmacokinetic profile of lemongrass infusion after a single dose oral administration to rats.All in vivo experimental procedures were approved by the Portuguese Veterinary General Division. Male Wistar rats were administered with a single oral dose of lemongrass infusion (68.24 mg/kg) and aliquots of plasma were collected at 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 4, 8, 12 and 24 h post-dosing. Liver and kidney samples were collected at 1, 2, 4, 8 and 24 h post-dosing. Plasma and tissues homogenates were processed and luteolin (LUT), luteolin 7-O-glucuronide (L7G), chrysoeriol (CHR), diosmetin (DIO) and luteolin 3'-O-sulphate (L3'S) were quantified employing a RP-HPLC-DAD method. The mean concentration-time profiles obtained were analyzed by a noncompartmental pharmacokinetic analysis using the WinNonlin ® .The pharmacokinetic studies revealed the presence of LUT, L7G, CHR, DIO and L3'S. L7G and L3'S were rapidly detected, with maximum plasma concentrations at 30 min after oral administrations. The concentration-time profile of liver samples evidenced compounds undetected in plasma: LUT, CHR and DIO. L7G, CHR and L3'S were detected in the liver from the first hour and stayed in the tissue until at least 24h.The kidney concentration-time profile revealed the presence of the same compounds detected in plasma.The pharmacokinetic analysis showed that the compounds present in lemongrass infusion are not present in plasma, liver or kidneys. On the other hand, L7G and L3'S were the major metabolites found in plasma and tissues, suggesting that lemongrass polyphenols are promptly metabolized in vivo and their metabolites may be the ones responsible for the anti-inflammatory activity of C. citratus, when orally administered.
