The political drivers of renewable energies policies

Abstract: International audienceThis paper empirically analyzes how political factors affect the deployment of renewable energy (RE) sources and compares their explanatory power to that of other economic, energy and environmental drivers that have received greater attention in the literature so far. The sample encompasses the EU countries bound to attain the target of 20% share of gross final energy consumption by 2020. The panel data analysis shows that lobbying by the manufacturing industry negatively affects RE deplo… Show more

“…Prior studies reveal that political stability can improve the environmental performance of the country by reducing pollutant emissions . The results can also be compared with the study of Cadoret and Padovano that governance quality and strong policies can increase renewable energy deployment in the country. However, a higher level of democratic functioning is essential for building a link between political stability and renewable energy consumption.…”

“…The policies should be developed by providing a clear insight in necessary legislation for business to be confident about the future policies to promote renewable energy. There are many policies, which have been identified by the scholars, that are able to deal with the regulatory barriers: obligations and mandates for the share of renewables in fuel; public procurement of renewable electricity and renewable carriers for transport; quotas and obligations for RES; well‐established generic or technology‐ or fuel specific targets, supported by the other effective policies, such as renewable portfolio standards, building codes, technology‐specific mandates and so on (Boie et al, ; Cadoret & Padovano, ; Kilinc‐Ata, ; Malik et al, ; Papież et al, ).…”

“…A great number of studies exist in the field of barriers of renewables (Byrnes, Brown, Foster, & Wagner, ; Huang et al, ; Karatayev, Hall, Kalyuzhnova, & Clarke, ; Malik et al, ; Nasirov et al, ; Raza et al, ; Seetharaman et al, ; Sovacool, ; Sovacool & Saunders, ; Stavytskyy, Kharlamova, Giedraitis, & Šumskis, ) and the policies and measures to promote renewables in various countries (Boie, Fernandes, Frías, & Klobasa, ; Cadoret & Padovano, ; Chen, Cheng, Vinko, & Song, ; Harrison, ; Kasperowicz, Pinczyński, & Khabdullin, ; Kilinc‐Ata, ; Nesta, Vona, & Nicolli, ; Papież, Śmiech, & Frodyma, ; Polzin, Migendt, Täube, & Von Flotow, ; Zhang, Li, Zhou, & Zhou, ). There are a limited number of studies that are dealing systematically with the analysis of barriers of renewables and policies and measures to overcome these barriers in specific sectors.…”

“…The impact of renewable energy on economic growth in the Black Sea and Balkan countries has been explored, and bidirectional causality between renewable energy consumption and economic growth has been found [6]. The problems of renewable energy price policies have been analyzed [7,8]. For example, in China, a good match between the various types of renewable energy policies is a better way of promoting renewable energy consumption [9].…”
