The polymeric immunoglobulin receptor (secretory component) in a human intestinal epithelial cell line is up‐regulated by interleukin‐1

Abstract: SUMMARYSecretory component (SC or polymeric immunoglobulin receptor) on mucosal epithelial cells mediates transcytosis of polymeric immunoglobulin into external fluids and functions as a receptor for polymeric immunoglobulin. SC expression in a human colonic adenocarcinoma cell line, HT-29 has been reported to be up-regulated by various cytokines, such as interferon-c, tumour necrosis factor-a and interleukin-4 (IL-4). However, up-regulation of SC by IL-1 is controversial. In this study, we investigated the ef… Show more

“…Although the quantitative behavior of each corresponding mRNA could not be controlled by Northern blot hybridization within the frame of this study, the cloning of expected APP-encoding mRNAs overall validates the selection of the other mRNAs found in Table 1. Furthermore, circumstantial evidence that rat proteins such as the polymeric immunoglobulin receptor or the protein B61 are adequately listed in the first part of Table 1 comes from the behavior of the cognate human gene that is known to be induced by one or more proinflammatory cytokine(s), at least in other cells and tissues (Hayashi et al, 1997;Holzman et al, 1990). However, we cannot completely exclude that a limited number of cDNAs were cloned from blood leukocyte mRNAs although the livers were extensively rinsed before RNA preparation.…”

“…Expression of SC is increased in vitro by proinflammatory cytokines including IFN-␥, alone (13) and in synergistic combination with IL-4 (14 -16), TNF-␣ (17), IL-1␣, and IL-1␤ (18). In terms of mucosal defense, this is an important response because infection and inflammation raise the local concentrations of these cytokines leading to an increase in the delivery of sIgA into the airway lumen.…”

“…Second, a direct effect of oxidative stress may induce changes in intestinal immunity cells, such as greater secretion of cytokines. Some cytokines regulate the expression of SC (28)(29)(30). Third, secondary systemic inflammation may be another cause of the rise of SC.…”
