Differences in the herbivore community between a plant's native (specialists and generalists) and introduced range (almost exclusively generalists) may lead to the evolution of reduced allocation to defences against specialist herbivores in the introduced range, allowing for increased allocation to competitive ability and to defences against generalist herbivores. Following this logic, the introduction of biological control agents should reverse this evolutionary shift and select for plants with life-history traits that are more similar to those of plants in the native range than those of plants in the introduced range that have not been exposed to biological control. In a common garden experiment, we compared performance and resistance traits of tansy ragwort, Jacobaea vulgaris, among populations from the introduced range (New Zealand and North America) that have either been exposed to or grown free from the biological control agent Longitarsus jacobaeae. For comparison, we included populations from the native European range. We found lower levels of generalist-deterrent pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) and of soluble phenolics in New Zealand populations with than in populations without exposure to L. jacobaeae, while the opposite pattern was detected among North American populations. Contrary to expectation, populations with exposure to L. jacobaeae revealed more feeding damage by L. jacobaeae than populations without exposure. Introduced populations had higher levels of PAs and reproductive output than native J. vulgaris populations. Jacobaea vulgaris was introduced in different parts of the world some 100-130 years ago, while L. jacobaeae was introduced only some 20-40 years ago. Life-history variation in annuals is known to be caused by size requirements for photoinduction of flowering, but the importance of germination date and injury was overlooked so far even though they may play an important role in disturbed habitats. To test the effect of germination date and timing of injury on life-history variation of an annual plant, we performed a 2-year pot experiment with the root-sprouting herb Rorippa palustris. Plants belonging to six different cohorts, and sown at monthly intervals from April to September, were injured (all stem parts removed) in three ontogenetic stages: vegetative rosettes, flowering plants and fruiting plants. Plants from the April, and partly from the May, cohort behaved as summer annuals: they started to bolt at the same time, resprouted and overwintered poorly. Plants from the June cohort flowered in the first season as well, but they entered the bolting stage a month later than the preceding cohorts, produced the least fruits, but overwintered successfully and flowered again the second year (polycarpic perennials).Cohorts germinating after the summer solstice did not flower during the first year and, with the exception of the September cohort, overwintered successfully and flowered the second year (winter annuals). After injury, the pattern of life-histories was the same as in control plants, although generative reproduction was interrupted by injury in the first year of the experiment. About one quarter of plants injured in the vegetative stage regenerated after injury irrespective of cohort, however, regeneration was enhanced in larger plants. Regeneration of plants in the flowering and fruiting stages depended on date of injury in relation to day length, being the most successful after the summer solstice. Life-history variation, together with the ability to resprout after severe injury in the pioneer wetland herb Rorippa palustris is caused by its ability to germinate throughout the season. Even the second tested factor, the effect of injury, is modified by germination time. The experiment points to a complex nature of factors affecting lifehistory variation as well as resprouting after severe injury in short lived plants.

O objetivo principal desse trabalho foi determinar a fenologia de Senecio brasiliensis, S. oxyphyllus, S. heterotrichius e S. selloi, e relacioná-la com a epidemiologia da intoxicação em bovinos, na região sul do Rio Grande do Sul. O estudo fenológico foi feito durante dois anos nos municípios de Bagé e Capão do Leão. As leituras foram mensais durante o período vegetativo e quinzenais no período reprodutivo das espécies, para observação desde sua emergência até dispersão de sementes, avaliando-se o vigor, e relacionando essas variáveis com fatores ambientais. Os resultados permitiram concluir que durante todo o ano há emergência de plantas de Senecio spp, desde que haja condições ambientais favoráveis, como umidade e luz, e as fenofases vegetativas são praticamente constantes durante todo o ciclo da planta. Fatores ambientais desfavoráveis como o déficit hídrico, o manejo do solo e o dano de insetos, associados ou não, podem alterar o ciclo das plantas e serem determinantes para a sua permanência no ambiente. A maioria dos exemplares, das quatro espécies, comportou-se como anual e monocárpica. A espécie mais persistente no ambiente foi S. heterotrichius (15% das plantas persistiram durante os dois anos de estudo), seguida de S. selloi (2,8%) e S. brasiliensis (0,9%). S. oxyphyllus não permaneceu no ambiente por mais de um ano.
