The possible role of glutathione-S-transferase activity in diabetic nephropathy

Abstract: The most common cause of end stage renal disease is diabetic nephropathy. An early diagnosis may allow an intervention to slow down disease progression. Recently, it has been hypothesized that glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activity may be a marker of severity of chronic kidney disease. In particular, a lower GST activity is present in healthy subjects compared to patients with nephropathy. In the present review we illustrate the scientific evidence underlying the possible role of GST activity in the developm… Show more

“…Alternatively, it could be suggestive of the onset of kidney diseases. Certain isoforms of GST are elevated at the early stage and during the progression of kidney diseases [62,63]. The increase in renal GST observed in this study may also be due to NiCl 2 -induced damage to renal tubules.…”

“…GST was also postulated as a marker of diabetic nephropathy [33]. Decreased GST levels were demonstrated in patients with such neurodegenerative diseases as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease.…”

“…The studies carried out so far concern the occurrence of oxidative stress in the body by increased concentrations of lipid peroxidation products and reduced activity of antioxidant enzymes or other antioxidants. [ 17 20 ] These reduced values of oxidative enzymes can disturb the body's prooxidative-antioxidative homeostasis by participating in the pathogenesis of diseases, and increased values of oxidative stress can be a symptom of an adaptive reaction and an attempt to alleviate the effects of these pathological changes [ 21 , 22 ].…”
