The potential impact of leachate-contaminated groundwater of an ex-landfill site at Taman Beringin Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Abstract: Spreading of leachates to soil, surface and groundwater aquifers is a prevailing problem with unlined landfills, causing many problems with adverse impacts on the surrounding environment. The impact of leachate contamination on groundwater quality was investigated from unlined ex-landfill site at Taman Beringin in Malaysia to identify the characteristics of the groundwater, and the possible impacts on the environment. Various physicochemical parameters including: temperature, pH, color,

“…The elevated total height is almost 40 m from the foot of the landfill (90 m above sea level). Atta et al (2015) pointed out that ground level reaches up to 55.72 mRL in the landfill site. However, the ground level at the capped area of the landfill, which forms a plateau at the top central part of the landfill, is deeper and about 87.86 mRL (Uni-Technologies Sdn.…”

“…Currently, there are ongoing activities and construction projects carried out to restore the site. The Taman Beringin ex-landfill site measures about 30-hectare (ha) and located at North Jinjang; about 10 km North West of Kuala Lumpur Federal Capital Territory of Malaysia at latitude 03° 13.78' North and longitude 101° 39.72' East (Atta et al, 2015). The elevated total height is almost 40 m from the foot of the landfill (90 m above sea level).…”

“…Therefore, groundwater polluted by landfill leachate became a major environmental problem [3][4][5]. Depending on the type and the level of the chemicals elements of waste, the leachate can be a dangerous material affecting human health [6][7][8][9][10].…”

“…It is important to consider that MSW irregular management of these activities causes negative environmental impacts. Local scale impacts such as contamination of soil, surface water and groundwater and on a global scale as emissions of greenhouse gases, mainly methane and carbon dioxide, are reported (El-Fadel et al 2002;Atta et al 2015;Wu et al 2015).…”
