The Potential of Hormonal Contraception to Influence Female Sexuality

Abstract: The association between female sexual function and hormonal contraception is controversial. Recognition and management of sexual side effects in women using hormonal contraceptives are challenging. An unsatisfactory number of studies report the influence of the available contraceptives on female sexuality. This article provides an updated narrative review regarding the effect and the magnitude of the impact that hormonal contraceptives play in female sexual function.

“…However, evidence shows that this is an unrealistic expectation, with many women not knowing that the menstrual and other symptoms they experience could be improved with a different choice of contraceptive and some women feeling too embarrassed to discuss certain side effects, e.g. combined oral contraceptive-related loss of libido, with their HCP [16][17][18][19][20]. It is therefore important both for HCPs to ask their patients open-ended questions, to help trigger a discussion, and, perhaps more importantly, for patients to be actively encouraged to speak up during consultations.…”

“…All combined oral contraceptives are taken daily, and this may cause hormonal fluctuations and, consequently, poor compliance. Various side effects have been reported because of using oral contraceptives, including headache, nausea, breast tenderness, vaginal dryness, loss of libido, weight gain, irritability, and depression [17,18]. Some studies reported that the use of combined oral contraceptives is associated with an increased risk of breast cancer due to the carcinogenic nature of estrogen-progesterone contraceptives [19], cervical cancer [20], venous thromboembolism [21], and HIV [22,23].…”
