The Potential of Indonesian Heterobranchs Found around Bunaken Island for the Production of Bioactive Compounds

Abstract: The species diversity of marine heterobranch sea slugs found on field trips around Bunaken Island (North Sulawesi, Indonesia) and adjacent islands of the Bunaken National Marine Park forms the basis of this review. In a survey performed in 2015, 80 species from 23 families were collected, including 17 new species. Only three of these have been investigated previously in studies from Indonesia. Combining species diversity with a former study from 2003 reveals in total 140 species from this locality. The diversi… Show more

“…Many of these compounds found in heterobranchs are obtained from their diet, while others are biotransformed, or de novo biosynthesized by the molluscs. Bacterial origin has been suggested for several types of compounds in heterobranchs [280]. However, very few studies rigorously demonstrate this.…”

“…Nudibranchs, are one of many marine invertebrate groups that feed on marine sponges, a source of bioactive compounds. The bioactive compounds found in nudibranchs are greatly influenced by food and symbiotic bacteria (Fisch et al, 2017). Nudibranchs have a wide variety of bacteria that are affected by location and food.…”

“…Nudibranch dikenal sebagai biota beracun (Fisch et al, 2017), di mana tingkat racun biota ini dapat berubah-ubah disebabkan oleh perubahan pola makan, misalnya dari jenis makanan yang satu ke jenis makanan yang lain. Dalam penelitian ini dapat dilihat ada jenis menempati karang, tetapi juga ada yang menempati sponge ataupun alga.…”
